~ Summertide âLiterary Institate.â
As announced last week this. Institute was
openedin Messrs. Strong's Hall onthe eve-
ning of âl'uesday last. Aftera short speech
trom the President 1). Enman, Ksq., in which
he stated to the audience tht Intention of the
Institute, its salutary tendencies, &c. F. Me-
Neil!, Esq., came furward and gave an ad+
dress, wherein he briefly glanced at sone of
the most important events which transpired
during the passing year, both on our own
Island and in distunt parts of theâ world; re-
terred to the wholesome influence which in-
stitutes similarto the one how being turmed,
had upon young men who availed themselves
of the facilities they afforded for mental de-
velopement, &Âą. âI. McKinluy, Esq., then
came forward and entertaihed. the audience,
by reading what he considered as very
appropriate for the season, ** stayeâ from
Charles Dickenâs â Christuias Carrol.â âThos.
Kirwan, Esq., was the next who took the
platform, and read in a pleasing and
natural manner some excellent selections
from the poets; le also read an original
poem entitled the âSummerside boys,â
which was amusing and instuctive. It ix to
be hoped that the Summerside boys wiâ, profit
by the admonition.âAfter these »_yccedings
Were brought to a close, Capt, Jus, Walsh,
Mr. John Gaffyey gud the âyice-President,
Mr. J. F, Buker, made u few suitable re-
inarks, Rey, James MeTvonald being presest,
Was calicd upon to m.ke some remarks, to
which he cheertilly responded. He stated
that it auguredâ. weil for the prosperity of the
Institute to see so respectable an audience
present, und chere were various micans by
which insiruction could be imparted, and
that on Lostitute of this kind was one of those
me?.ns; he also expressed the hope that the
Anstitute would continue to prosper. Mr.
John Sharpe, at the request of the nudience
read Burnsâ âTam O. Shanter,â which he did
in the good old style. Judging trom the
large and respectable audience present and
the number of names now on the roll, there
is no doubt, but the Institute, with the co-
operation of the wealthy portion of our towns-
men, will continue to flourish, âVires acgui-
vet cundo, âThe next meeting will be held in
the same place, on âTuesday evening next.

the most important events which transpired
during the passing year, both on our own

platform, and read in a pleasing and
natural manner some excellent selections
from the poets; le also read an original
poem entitled the âSummerside boys,â
which was amusing and instuctive. It ix to

which he cheertilly responded. He stated
that it auguredâ. weil for the prosperity of the
Institute to see so respectable an audience
present, und chere were various micans by
which insiruction could be imparted, and
that on Lostitute of this kind was one of those
