    Odds and Ends,
yest ee OUTSET e rca, arts ‘ial
    THE OHINA QUESTION,

“You never sce sich chaney no were
how, as this,’ said Mrs, Partington, as
she took from an obscure corner of the
old cupboard a teapot of antique ap-
    Pearance, noseless and handleless, and
cracked here and there, and stayed with
    puity where Time's mischievous fingers

d threatened a dissolution of the union.
    **That teapot was my grandmother's
afore she was married; I remember it
just as well as it was yesterday.”

    “‘Remember when your grandmother
    was married?” queried Ike.

    **No, no, the teapot,” responded she;
“*and it was a perfect beauty, with the
Garden of Eden on it, and flowers and
Adam and Eve on it, so natural that you
    might almost smell their fragrance.”
oy What, smell Adam and Eve?” said

    eC.

    “No, the flowers, stupid!” replied
she; ‘my grandfather gave it to her
asamemento mori of his undying in-
fection, because the colors wouldn't fade,
and they never have, though children are
destroying angels, and they made the
mischief among the crockery, as_ they
    always do now-a-days.”

She had held the teapot in her hands
as she spoke, andnow she gazed in silence
upon the picture of Adam and Eve, par-
tially concealed in the bushes, and she
revelled in the memory of the past, and
wondcred if her grandmother ever came
back to look at the old teapot that she
had preserved so carefully, as an_heir-
loom ; then, carefully brushing off some
dust that rested upon it, she replaced it,
and charged Ike impressively to keep
it most sacrilegiously for her sake. He
said he would, as plain as his mouth full
of preserved plums would let him, and
wiped his movth on the sleeve of his best
    jacket.

    Syapariy.—Here's fresh halibut!”
cried the fish-vender, beneath Mrs. Var-
    tington's window,

**T know it is, you poor cretur!” said |

the estimable lady, looking after him
    with a commiserating expression; ‘1
know itis ; and I believe it is the seventh
fresh haul about that he made by here
to-day; and he speaks so pitiful, too,
when he is telling us ot it, it makes my
    very heart ache for him,”

She caught not the deep significance
of the cry; but her benevolenze, always
on the alert, eonstrucd itinto an appeal
    for sympathy. Heaven's blessings on
thee, Mrs. Partington, and, with re-
verence be it wished, where hearts are
regarded, may you turnup a trump.

    New Remepy ror a Drovenr.—Mrs
Partington was in the country one Aug-
ust, and for a whole month not one drop
of rain had fallen. One day she was
slowly walking along the road, with her
umbrella over her head, when an old
man, who was mending up a little gap of
wall, accosted her, at the same time de-
positing a large stone on the top of his

    pile.
a Mrs. Partington, what do you think
    can help this cre drought?”

The old lady looked at him through
her spectacles, at the same time smelling
    a fern leaf,

“IT think,’’ said she, in a tone of orac-
ular wisdom, ‘‘I think a little rain would
help it as much as anything.”

It was a great thought. ‘The old gen-
tleman took off his straw hat, and wiped
his head with his cotton handkerchief, at
the same time saying that he thought so
    too.

“ Don’t crowd so, good woman,” said
cld Roger, at the Lowell Institute, as he
was waiting his turn to give his name.
** Don’t crowd so!” and, looking oyer
his shoulder, he met the reproachful
glance of Mrs. Partington herself, who
was there for the same purpose. He im-
mediately gave way to her, and the next
morning found himself not divisible by 7,
nor anytl.ing like it. ‘So much for po-
    liteness !” growled old Roger; * she'll
get all the Natural Religion now; and
much good may it do her!” ‘You would
have smiled to see the spiteful manner in
which the littie min said this.

** Have your cabbages tender hearts ?”
asked a woman of a costermonger. ‘They
can't have anything else, marm,” was the
reply, ‘‘ for they've been crying about
    the streets all the morning.”

“*My German friend, how long have
you been married?” Vell, dat is a ting
vat I seldom don't like to talk about, but
ven I dves,it seems so long as never yas.”

Supposing a heavy shower to have just
given over, what resemblance does it bear
to the tale of a fox? One is the end of
a hard rain, and the other is the end of a
    reynard,

Ifa man kas a right to be proud of
anything it is of a good action, done as
it ought to be, without any base intcrest
lurking at the bottom of it.

A man named Peck, in St. Louis, rai-
ses his children by the bushel. He has
    10 pecks now—two bushels and a half.

    Vehemenence creates dislike, excessive
mildness contempt; be neither so severe
as to be hated, norso tame as to be in-
    sulted.

The person who said that his mouth
never uttered a lie, probably spoke through
    his nose.

Josh Billings says he has ‘* seen some
awful and bad throte diseases cured in 3
days by simply jineing a temperance so-
    ciety.

    ‘When a gentleman steps on a lady's
train the lady should turn around and say
politely, ‘I beg your pardon, sir,” and
the gentleman should bow and say ‘1
    accept your apology, madame.”

A codfish breakfast and an india rub-
ber coat will keep any man dry.
