    SUMMERSIDE JOURNAL,

    THU

    RSDAY, O

    eee

    CT OBER 8, 1868.

    [apvertismENt. |

    TO THE PUBLIC.

FTER no little amount of labour, not to
speak of the leather worn in visits to a

+ P., and dragging little children thither to
be sworn, I observe thatthe veritable William
MelIntosh has conceived and brought forth a
self-condemning absurdity in the J’rogrese of
28th ult., which not only most fully contra-
dicts itself and everything previously main-
tained by its author, but shamefully exposes
his family in making them appear with contra-
dictory statements. He says that I have mule
an incorrect statement in my previous letter,
Dut which it is the sapient William does not
tell. He does not make a statement, he ha-
not the manliness to do so, fearing he might
be called before a tribunal of justice to give
proof, but he sets forth an array of little
children’s stories, and like a poltroon sneeks
behind the scenes himself. Is this manly? Is
it honest? Is it not much like the man,
who, when he saw a bear entering his house,
jumped up through a space in the ceiling, and
when his wife had killed it, descended ex-
claiming :—** Well done Margaret, aint we
brave.” Did he not accuse my boy Lewis of
causing his sc n’s death, and the public ex-
pected to see something in support of this ac-
cusation, but he shows nothing, and therefore
he haa to swallow the lie. The children main-
tain that it was some Louis D sugherty injured
Ais son, butas I have not a son called Louis,
amy children are clearly exhonorated from the
    dying imputation.

But let us examine the contradictory state-
ments of the little children, His son declared
and that at the hour of his death too, that the
Anjuries received were on the LEG, ARM AND
KNEE, and that severe pains existed in those
parts, although no pain or hurt on his leg was
even hinted of during his illness. and the pub-
dlic will observe that the boy, ia his last
‘declaration, does not mention that he received
m hurt in his head or his other knee, But the
unfeeling father contradicts his sons lust de-
elaration, where he says, that at no time dur-
ing his illness did he gomplain of pains save
jn his two knees. And Mary Ann (the little

ri) swears that he compliined of his head
and knee only, thus belieing the former state-
ment made by himself and father, ‘The litle
boy said hie was struck with SVICKS ANDA
STONE, so docs linig John, but Mary Ann
again swears that it was ÂŤ STICK AND
SLONE only, thus again contradicting one
    another.

Mr. McIntosh declares that his son was in
perfectly good health on the morning in ques-
tion, but Mary Ann again to the rescue and
swears that he always complained of his head.
Here we have witness against witness, tes~
timony against testimony, and astern affidavit
against a solemn declaration, surely where
there is such discord, the fabric of lies must
full to the ground, and the covinous slanderer
will be shunned and detested by saint and sin-
ner. McIntosh asserts that a deel ration of
hurts received was made by hisson of his own
will, but those who visited his house at that
time know this to be a lie, as itis well known
that he often questioned and coaxed his son to
answer his,—" Did’nt he strike you there,
Willie ;” and it is also known that his son of-
ten refused to answer the question thus put,
feeling, no doubt, that it was not true. O
shame where is thy blush! I want the public
to understand that the sticks spoken of were,
necording to McIntosh’s story, thrown at lis
fon, and that he was not beat as the other boy
jas it. Mr. McIntosh said, when his boy was
first known to be sick, that it was his knee

was hurt, and the boy ccmplained of nothing |

else, for some time, until the internal discase
of which he died, according to th. Doctors’
evidence, had Jaid fast hold of him, and then
he complained of other parts, and as was very
natural his head, and the father explained that
these pains arose from hurts, but the boy is
known to have refused to say so. A close ex-
amination, by parties, of the head and other
parts said to be struck, resulted in their not
Deing able to discover any sign or syinpton of
u hurt or bruise, nor could the veritable Mr.
Mcl. himself show any marks when asked to
do so, either by one of the Physicians or to
others, save a small pimple on the arm where
he suid his boy got a blow from a little stone
two years ago, although ne deniesit, and]
would add that he ought to know whose boy
did it, as it appears he is well acquainted with
    magical performances and spirit rapping.

From the fact that McIntosh admits that no
mark existed upon any part, save the arm
struck two years ago, and into which he had
driven the pain from the knee, as he blandly
told the Physicians, it will be plainly seen that
he is only giving circulation to slander to sat-
isfy a poor spite he holds against my fumily on
what account it is hard to tell. If sticks
weighing four pounds cach would strike his
boy, would they not leave marks, or would
they not lame the boy so that be could not
walk. or if in the head would they not stun
him, but instead of this le went home and
ered because he did not want to go to school
as the father stated afterwards; went to school
where he spent the whole forenoon showing
no symptom of being hurt, played with the
other children, and went nome saying he
would not go to school any more, and crying
because he was desired to go back in the atter-
noon. ‘This is the testimony of his parents
when he was first taken ill, The father called
upon the teacher in the afternoon, and told
him to keep him but . half a day in future, as
he was a sickly boy. ‘There was no mention
of ahurt at this time, and when John went to
school next day, being asked what kept his
Trother home, said that he was chasing out
the geese and fell down and hurt lis knee.
‘The two physicians give as their opinions that
he did not die from any injuries he may have
received, but from some internal disease, and
this with the contradictory evidence of the
children, ‘nd te want of a single mark on
the places said to be struck is enough to con-
vince any candid person that he never receiy-
eda blow. I would also observe that when 4
heard his boy was dead, 1 sent word that I
desired a thorough investigation of the matter,
na Coroner's Inquest, and Mr. Melntosh was
informed of this, yet he would not take those
steps, for his statements were false. I would
now ask him to put the matter in Court, or I
am willing to have a certain number of honest
men to investigate the case, I woul l now ask
the public, who has the pearance of truth,
the man who desires an investigation of the
matter, end gives good reasons for disbeliey-
ing his (McIntosh’s) story, or the one that
    inakes contradictory statements aud fears
justice. But the man who belies himself and
expofes his family as Mr, McIntosh has done,
must be moonstruck and ought to have our
commiseration, and I would remind him that
this is not the first slander to his shame only
be it spoken, and if he will not take steps to
obtain a clear investigation of the whole
master, it will be his wisdom to hold his
    unru y tongue.

    For the present, I am
    Yours, &e.,
    FRANCIS DOUGHERTY.
