    Re cae

    1868.

    ± ‘i :
    Racy Aiterature,

A Deputy Sheriffin Keene, some year
ego, had a habit when anything occurred
to him which he had forgotten to state—
quickly raising his right hand, with fore-
finger extended, and always prefacing his
remarks with the exclamanation, ** By the
way!’ It being once his duty as crier to
give notice of the opening of the court, he
began, ‘* O, yes, all persons having any-
thing to do Leiorg the court of common
pleas will draw nigh and hearken to the
evidence. ** Here he satdown; but re-
membering that he had forrgo(ten the fin-
ishing touches, instantly rose and ex-
claimed, ** By the way, God save the
    State.”

An old lady was telling her grand-
children about some trouble in, Seotland,
in the course of which the chief of her
clap was beheaded.—” It was nae great
thing ofa head, to be sure,’’said the good
lady,” but it was a sad loss to him.”

An cecentric man in Bath, Maine, was
asked to aid a fe~cign mission. He gave
« quarter of a dollar, but stopped the
agent as he was departing, and said:
“* Here's a dollar to pay the expense of
getting the quarter to the heathen.”

A merchant who dicd suddenly, left in
jis desk a letter written to one of his cor-
respondents. His clerk seeing that it
was necessary to send the letter, wrote at
the bottom—* since writing the above 1
    have died.”

“Guilty or not guilty?” sharply said the
City Judge the other day to an inattentive
    female prisoner in the dock.
your honor pleases. It’s not for the likes
ome to dictate to your honcr's worship,”
    was the reply.

A traveller went into an inn after a
shower, and asked the landlord to show
lim a good fire ;** for, saidhe,” Iam yery
wet ;” and then turning to the waiter, he
said: ** Bring me a tankard of ale imme-
    diately, for 1‘m plaguey dry.”

    BEAUTIFUL EXTRACTS,

He that knows useful things, and not
he that knows many things is the wise
    man.

Every man cherishes in his heart some
object—some shrine at which his adora-
tion is paid, unknuwn to his fellow-
    mortals,

tis conferring a kindness to deny at
once a favor which you intend to refuse
    at last.

Let persons understand one another in
good faith as honest men, and not as
thieves who wish to cheat each other.

‘‘T never wonder,” says Dean Swift,
**to see men wicked; but] often wonder
    to sce them not ashamed.”

Happiness must arise from our cwn
temper and actions, and not immediately
    fiom any external conditions. Fe

So long as men are imprudent in their
diet and business, doctors and lawyers
    will ride in carriages.

What good would centuries do the man
who only knows how to waste his time?

Little drops of rain brighten the mecad-
ows, and little acts of kindness brighten
    the world.

A great step is gained when a child
has learned that there is no necessary
connection between liking to do a thing
    and doing it. )

Meny condemn the organization of the
past; but they all observed their pur-
posese—have really done great good: and
the world would have suffered more
    without them.—Adin Bullou.

    Curiosities or THE ENGuisu Lan-
    ouacr.—How differently is the ‘action
described in scouring a forests and scour-
jog a floor; in skimming the sea and
skimming milk; in breaking a dish,
breuking a colt and breaking a command-
ment; in catching a train and catching a
cold; in falling in a ditch, falling in love,
filling in your own estimation, and falling
in with a friend, or falling out of a ca.-
riage. So you might read ofa museum
of wonders, illuminated by the light of

_other days ; furnished with music, played
on the feelings by the man who having
ywered his voice by means of ropes, mur-
dered a tune, but subseqnently tried his
voice and acquitted himsclf with case Âą
    with walls hung with pictures of despair;
‘vith a library filled partly with volumes
of smoke, and where could be seen
    the lady who sat on the lapse of agÂąs;
the attoiney’s clerks who engrossed a
    man’s attention; mathematician who is
so deyoted to figures that he frequently
casts up his eyes; the girl who was saved
    ine wreck by clinging to a forlorn hope;
aman who was wounded by sitting
down on thé spur of the moment; the
acrobat that jumps at conclusions; the
cup of sorrow that overflowed; the chain
which bound a freeborn mind ; the ticking
ofan oyster bed; the receipt giving to a
man who paid his respects ; the suspend.
ers used for the breeches of trust; the
. quiver which was observed in the voice
of (n)arrow-minded men ; a lock of hair
from the head of a discourse, and one
trom the head of a cabbage; a flat iron
to smooth ruffled tempers; a phial of
tears from a weeping willow; a button
from the coat of the stomach; a sheal
from the shock of on earth-quake, and
many other articles equally rare and in-
    teresting.

    AAR ARA AAA Dns

Oh! let youth cherish the happiest of
earthly beons while yet it is at his com-
mund; for their commeth a day to all,
when ‘neither the voice of the lute nor
the birds” shall bring back the sweet
slumbers that fell on their young eyes as
    unbidden as the dews. ;

Education is a companion which no
misfortune can depress, no clime destroy,
no enemy alienate, no despotism enslave,
At home a friend, abroad an introduction,
in solitude a solace, in society an orna-
ment. It chastens voice, it guides virtue
it gives at once grace and government to
