    \ hich was the following :—‘! What, do you
    think I'll shave you for nothing and give you
    n drink?” Now we have no doubt but that
    our neighbor Mr, Winkler, who has recently
    opened up a Barber's Shop in Summerside,on
    the strectin the rear ot the Journal office,
    will act just as kindly, Who, of a cold morn-
    ing, would be scraping his face with a dull
    razor at home, when he can step into the
    Barber's Shop and have it done for five cents.
    Or who would go without the latest cut when
    he can get it for ten cents.

    The Rey. H, B. Swabey informs the public
    that in consequence of being interrupted in
    the delivery of his speech atthe Meeting of
    the Diocesan Chureh Society held at Saint
    Paul's School Room, on the 22nd inst., itis
    his intention to publish his Speech, in Pam-
    phiet form, and circulate it for general infor-
    mation.—/sl,

    Anyssixta.—A communication has recently
    been received from Dr. Blane, one of the
    Abyssinian prisoners, which will unquestion-
    ably prove of great use to the officer command-
    ing the expeditionary force now advancing to}
    their relict. low the documeut was smug- |}
    gicd out of prison to the set coast, and finally |
    was conveyed to India, we do not know, but}
    in about six weeks atter its being written, it}
    was published in the Zimes of India. It)
    contains a full account of the yeography or
    the country, with its towns and their popula-
    tion, the number ofthe troops, the climate,
    the diseases incident to it, and the best and
    most approved remedies for the same, together
    with full particuliurs as to the present political
    condition of the Abyssinian people. Mandala, |
    which is the principal stronghold of King |
    Theodorus, is represented as being well nigh
    impregnable, but is unprovided with witer, |
    and its garrison would therefore be compelled
    to surrender, if besieged for any length of
    time. This place is surrounded by an almost
    perfect natural wall of basaltic columns from
    80 to 700 feet in height. ‘The three gates}
    which are the only means of exitand entrance, |
    are well fortified with earthworks. Inasmuch}
    however as the Abyssimans do not seem to|
    be possessed of artillery, it is probable that!
    they would not be able to hold it against an}
    army provided with Armstrong guns, and)
    would be competled to succumb aitera few |
    hours shelling. Dr. Blance’s letter has been}
    forwarded to General Napicr,— Exchange Pa.

    An ovitor ofa Cuba paper says :—General
    Taarnza, whose death at the hands of the}
    Mexicans we have all so deeply mourned, is |
    now in this city (Havana) engaged in rending |
    the accounts of his execution and funeral. |

    There is to-day, on Blackwell's Island, N.
    York, a man who, a few years ago, was one
    of the most learned and cloquent, acceptable
    and promising young ministers in the land.
    Me refused an invitation from the First Pres-
    byterian Church of Troy, to settle as a collea-
    gue pastor with the Rey. Dr. Boman. He is
    now a drivelling idiot, not by a visitation
    from God, but through the excessive use oi
    alcoholic liqnor. |

    har The free schools of Massachusetts
    cost the State $10 per head; female teachers
    reccive a little less than a dollara day. The
    number of scholars is 256,000; teachers S000, |
    seven-cights of whom are females.

    A St. John N, B. paper says that the
    Eastern Express brought on Tuesday night
    one hundred thousand dollars of the half
    million of Dominion Government paper in-
    tended for circulation in New Brunswi
    ‘The remainder of the amount will probably
    reach here by next steamer,

    The Ottawa Zimes argues that if Nova
    Scotia is determined to be extricated from
    the Union the location of the railway route
    should be considered with a view to that con-
    tingency.

    The Editor of Tlunts Merchant's Magazine
    estimates that in 50 years the New Dominion
    will have a population equal to thatof the
    United States, as shown by the census of
    1860.

    ‘There is a general reduction of wages going
    on throughout the United States. ‘The times
    being very bad the employees generally con-
    cur in what they sce is a necessity

    The boldness and audacity of the Fen-
    ans in face of the vigorous measures of
    repression which have been adopted ex-
    cites much uneasiness.

    The principal businegs going on about this
    time at the United Stites navy yards is the
    discharge of workmen, many hundreds having
    been thrown out of employment at this most
    bitter and inclement season of the year.

    ‘Tne Quastion Serres These eminent
    men, Dr. James Clark, I ichin to Queen
    Victoria, and Dr. Hughes Bennett, say that
    consumption canbe cured. Dr. Wistar knew
    this, when he discovered his Balsam of Wild
    Cherry, and experience lias proved the cor-
    rectness of his epinion.

    or, ‘They act directly upon the roots of tho
