‘* Tere comes the sogers, aunt! cricd |
    Tke, at the door, ** here they comes in}
    their bear-skins !”

“In their bare skins!” said Mrs.
    Partington,—glancing out of the window
into the cold; towards the weathercock
that had looked obstinately east for three |
days, much to the danger of a return of
her rheumatism that an east wind always
induced, so much so that she had declar-
ed her determination to move in the

    |

vicinity of some Catholic Chnrch, whose | other house in this country, in quality of
    | Goods and prices, for cash or approved

vane always points one way,—** in their
hare skins such a day as this! Hi
    landers, I guess.”

She hastened to the door, and a com- |
pany, with huge and hideous caps, were |
then marching by. She saw that she)
    was sold.

    “Ah!” said she, ‘ this
horrors of war, to go lo: nf 803 and |
s pose one of them poor creatures should |
fall down,—he is so top heavy his heels |
would go up in the air, like a cornstalls |
witch, and all his brains would run down
into histhead. 1 can't bear to look at

Ata church in Scotland, where there
was a popular call fora minister, as it is
termed, two candidates offered to preach, |
whose names were Adam and Low. ‘The
latter preached in the morning, and took
for his text, ‘*Adam where art thou?”
Tle made a very excellent discourse, and
the congregation were yery much edified.
In the afternoon, Mr. Adam preached
upon the words, ‘*Lo, here am 1.” The
impromptu and the sermon gained him
    the appointment.

I say, Sambo, docs you know what
makes de corn grow so fast when you
    put the manure on it?

    No I dont, Pompey.

Now I'll jist tell you.—When de corn
begins to smell de manure, it don’t like
de ’fumery, so hurries out of the ground
and sits up as far as possible, so as not
    to smell de bad air.

    Tcan't bear children!’ said Miss
    Prim, disdainfally.

Mrs. Partington looked at her over
her spectacles mildly before she replied.

*Âą Porhaps if you could you would like
them better,’ she at last said; ‘but
why is it that unmarried old maids and
single bachelors are always railing at the
ehildren? It seems as if they had never
read the command to our forefathers to
increase and multiply and punish the
earth. For my part, I love the little
dears, and I had rather hear a child ery
any day than hear the brass band,

And she went right to work covering
    a ball for Ike.

A ragged little boy being kindly accost-
    ed and presented with some candy by a}
yery tall man, looked up to his benefactor, |
and in a tone of sympathy asked—

“Does not your head fecl giddy and
    dizzy, 94

‘© No my child. Why do you ask?”

“ Because it is so fur away up there
    from the ground.

    The gentleman passed on.

An Irishman with a heavy bundle on his |
    shoulder, riding onthe front of one of the}
Neck cars was asked wily he did not set!
his burden on the platform. Ifo replied, |

‘Be jabers the horse have enough to!
do to drag me, I'll carry the bundle.”
