    speaking of the barbarous. manner in}
which the women of these countries ar¢
treated, not as man’s equal, but as his |
slave; how thankful should men, espeei-
ally women, be for the gospel.

The address was an hour and ten
minutes long. ‘The speaker used no

notes and spuke with much ease and clo- |
    quence.

After singing ‘*On the Mountain tops
appear’ &e,, by the and efficient
    Choir of the Dresbyte Church, and}

    1
some remarks by the Pastor, the meeting |
    dispersed with the benedict

    ction.

    ——<2 -e
    A Hoeart-ronding Occurrence.

A Scnoonen ediled the Lalla Rooka, com-
manded by Capt. Davison, formerly of New
London, and loaded with ship plink by Mr,
Gay. of Lot 49, lett Egmont Bay on Saturday
evening last. ‘Chere were on board besides
Capt. Davison and Mr. Gay, a son of the |
tin’s, 2 fine lad of about 17 or 18 years of
age, and a sailor whose name we have not
heard. After rounding Cape Egmont a equal
struck the schooner and threw lige on her
beam ends, ‘The erew cut away the masts
and she righted . was Washed over-
buard and the cabin was full of water, so the
four poor fellows were exposed, without shel-
ter, during tho whole of that Ditterly cold
night, to the pitiless fury of the gale, The
sea, it seems, made a complete br th over
the drifting wreck, and the water froze on the
men’s ¢'othes, making exertion next thing to
impossible. The captain—and to this, no
doubt, under Providence he owes his own
    preseryation—maie ¢ y exertion to keep
the others from perishing. But his efforts

were in ysin, One by one his companions, |/

benumbed by the cold and exhausted by their
exertions, lay down to die, and the poor man
with unutteratle anguish, no doubt, saw his
son perish by his side. The vessel was dis-
covered on Sunday morning near Strang’s
brickyard, by some Irenehmen. Three of
her crew, Gayy young Davison and the sailor,
were quite dead and incased in ice but Capt.
Davison was still alive, though insensible and
    badly frozen. ‘

Since writing the above we have scen the
    body of Mr. Gay, which was brought here on}
Wednesday, on its way to his home, Lot 49.
Ile was ne able man, about 45 years of
age, and leaves a wife and 5 children, ‘The
name of the other man that perished was
George Peardoa, of Charlottetown, who leaves
a wite and 2 chil —] vedy was interred |
in the St. Kleanor’s grave yard last evening.
The body of young Davison was taken to
New London, by his friends. We also learn
that Captain Davison is doing well—he has
one hand and one ancle badly frozen. He
s-ys Pearden dicd about 10 o'clock, Gay about
12, and his son a short time after.

pare Tun weather during the past weck
has been very stormy and cold. On Saturday
night lust it blew a regular g: ue and froze
hard; sufficiently har | to h nide good ice |
in the harbor had it been calm, Our harbor
is now full of ice, and several vessels are slut |
in, and others bound here are shutout. ‘fhe
Schooner Jnduin Queen made her way in on
‘Tuesday night. ‘The Steamer came up yes-
terday. but was unable to get in through the
ice. and after several attempts had been made
had to back out. She sent a boat ashore |
however, at Welling's Point, and touk off
    some thirty passengers.
