    Racy Pitervture.

An Irish Priest wishing to explain
the nature ofa miracle to a skeptical par-
ishioner gave the wretch a tremendous
    kick. '

‘© Did it hurt ye?” asked the reverend |
    futher.

** Hurt!” exclaimed the victim, tender-
ly solacing the aggrieved region with his
    hand.

«Well then,” said the clergyman com-
placentl;, ‘+ it would haye been a miracle
    if it hadu't hurt ye!”

    RATHER HARD ON Wis Burcwer,—
** Unele Enoch, what made the cats ye
owe so last night? I couldn't sleep I was
    so afraid.”

s Ahem! Ah! Yes. The meat the
butcher sent us yesterday, you know, was
so bad ave coulda’t cat it, so we threw it
to the cats and dogs, and | ’spect it gave
    the cats the chole

‘Well, why didn’t it give the dogs the
    cholera too ?”

‘True, but don’t you remember the
    dogs wouldn't eat it

Hic, Hxc, 1loc.—When the Rey. Dr.
Patton was in England he dined with
soveral gentlemen who used a great var-
icty of arguments to make him give up
his cold water principles. ‘* Now hero’
said one—‘there, Doctor, is some good
old hock ; surely you can’t decline this!”
** Cant?” replied the doctor ; ‘‘why, Sir,
T learnt to decline it when a boy; hie,
hec, hoc.’ ‘The table was in a roar, and
    the Doctor came off triumphant.

A clergyman, one Sunday, at the close
of his sermon, gave notice to a congrega-
tion that, in the course of the week, he
expected to go ona mission to the hea-
then. One of his parishioners exclaimed
** Why, my dear sir, you have never told
us one word of this before! What shall
we do?” ‘Oh, bother,” said the min-
ister, ** I don’t expect to go out of town.’

«There are some things which will
never be hurt by falling,” growled an old
man in Washington Market the other

    morning. ‘* What's them?” inquired a
    hukster. ‘‘ Prices,” said the old man;

    * they’re so. awful slow in falling that
    theyll never get smashed.” —«

A correspondent writes to ask if the
brow ofa hill ever becomes wrinkled ?—
‘he only information we can give him
on that point is, that we have often seen
    it furrowed.

    TIEN WILL AND WILL)
    NOT LAY.

When a hen is satisfied it will lay. It
is satisficd when it has enough to eat and
drink, and that of a good quality. It is
satisfied when it has warm quarters (in
winter). It is satisfied when it is unmo-
lested. It is fied when it has a safe,
retired place to lay, for a hen does not
want to be annoyed with doubt in regard
to its future progeny. It is satisfied
when it has room enough. It is satisfied
when it has a place to wallow in. It is
satisfied when it finds gravel and bits of
Lurnt bone strewn where it is. It is
satisfied with a varigty of food, animal
and vegetable, and vegetables from the
garden, such as cabbages, onions, etc.
It is satisfied when it feels the warming
influence of pepper mixed with its food.
It is particularly satisfied when it has
somebody to give it these things daily,
and be a daily frien! it—for the hen
is social and compant able. And, last-
ly, it is satisficd with a rooster.

But it is not satisfied when it suffers
for the want of food. It is not satisfied
with dirty water. It is not satisfied with
shivering in the cold. It is not satisfied
with disturbance and danger. It is not
satisfied when thrust with a great number
of hens and jostled’about. Ttis not sut-
isfied when it has a hard, naked floor,
where its bright cye cannot detect a grain
of sand to form a shell for its egy. It is
not satisfied when it has no safe place to

lay. It isnot satisfied when it is neg-
lected. And, last of all, it is greatly

dissatisfied when forsaken and left to
shift for itself, as is usually done in
barns, often trodden upon, at least its
toes, if not frozen off.—-Colman's “Rural.

    HOW TO EXHAUST A FARM.

Sell hay, and by doing less stock
can be kept; THA nently a sinaller
amount of manure ni ie made,

Plant and manure the'same land year
after year, oxeept the land in question,
and for all other land this involves the
    same principle as ‘selling’ hay.

T have known at least one farm exhaust- |
éd in fertility by this method. Engage
in the cultivation of fruit, tobacco or hops
    on an extensive scale; manure highly ;
this will have the same efiect as sclling
hay in diminishing the productive capa-
city of the farm. Practice universal fall
ploughing, that the finer and richer por-
tions of the soil may be blown or washcd
    away, leaving only the coarse’ or poorer |}
soil remaining. Vor the sake of employ. |
mint, Whether profitable or not, kecp an|
undue proportion 0 orking oxen and |
    horses; devote elmo;

    a chtire winter
to teaming; this swallleave a large pro-|
portion of the manure on the road, lost to]
    all agricultural purposes. Keep the same}
land for a gerden year after year. Coe
    tice indiscriminate ditching, even on the}
meadows and rans ot infested with flags.
Allow the wash of the side hills and the
droopings of baves to run. throvgh ee

yards and wash off more or less manure.
