    This month’s cover

The RED OAK (Quercus rubrus) was the favorite in recent
balloting to choose a provincial tree. The leaves turn
red to bright orange in the fall, and often stay on
part or all of the tree throughout the winter. The red
oak is an important tree for wildlife - acorns, buds
and twigs provide for for red squirrels, snowshoe

hares and many birds from blue jays to ruffed grouse.
