    On Monday evening Mr. Kennedy, the Scotch Vocal-
    calist, gave an entertainment at Temperance Hall, and
    was greeted with a large aud highly respectable au-
    dience, The programme was judiciously selected, and
    valoulated not only to please and gratify natives o:
    * Old Scotia,” but to delight a pracsarties audience,
    such asthat which visited the Hall on Monday evening.
    Me bus an excedingly pleasing voice, and sings wit
    arefined taste, His numerous illustrations of Scottish
    songs are extremely entertaining, while his humor is

    We learn that the gentleman above referred to will
    give one of his pleasing eutertainments in Charlotte-

    town, on the evening of the Caladonian Gathering, the
    21st instant.

    On the evening of Friday last, the 2ud inat., pre-
    vious to the heavy gale, a Boat containioy five per-
    sons, left Cape John, near Brule, Nova Scotia, for
    a night's fishing, and all on board are supposed to
    have perished. The boat has subsequenty been pick-
    ed up near Point Prim. The names of the parties
    were Charles Stramberg, Joho McLeod, and Paul
    MeDonald, farmers, Cdpe Jou; Chrates R. Stram:
    berg, teacher in the Academy, River John, and
    David J Stranberg,—containing, we understand, an
    unele and two brohters of Mr.N. P. Stramberg, of
    this city. —Js?,

    The body of John MeMahon, lost overboard a
    few days since from a Schooner from Richibueto,
    bound to Summerside, washed ashore near Sea Cow
    Head, on Monday last,—ZJs!.

    The weather bas been unusually hot for the past
    few days, the Thermometer, in the shade, ranging up
    to 85 degrees. Such extreme heat has not been
    experienced here for some years.—Zsl.

    On Saturday morning last, we were visited with
    _ & most terrific gale accompanied with heavy rain,
    The wind blew for some time from the S. E., and
    afterwards came round tothe S W. The Steamer
    Princess of Wales wus out in all the storm, beiug on
    the run from Summerside to Shediac. She proved
    herself to be an excellent sea boat, as she never re-
    ceived the least damage, although some heavy seas
    broke over her bows. This is one of the best in-
    stances we have ever had of the sea-worthiness of
    the boat and the ability of Capt. Evans aud his
    crow.—. Journal,

    The St. Joho Telegraph, Aug. 6th, gives the fol-
    Jowing :—It is said the writ for the Elections to the
    Commons will issue about the 10th inst., and will be
    made returnable in fifty days. It is not improbable
    that the Elections will be over in New Brunswick
    and Quebec by the end of this mouth; those of
    Outario aud Nova Scotia may come off latest,

    fore the close of the present session, the correspondence
    which bad passed between the British Government
    and that of the United States in regard to the Alabama
    case, and all other documents beaten on the case, In
    the House of Lords, in acgordance with the under-
    standing arrived at yesterday evening, the Reform Bill
    was read for a third time and passed,

    Lonpox, Aug. 6th, evening.—Advices received here
    from Abyssinia report that the British captives in that
    country are no longer in the hands of King Theodore.

    Brewis, Aug. 7th, evening—The Prussian Govern-
    ment has become anxious for the safety of Baron Von
    Maonius, Minster of Prussia to Mexico. at last ac-
    counts the Baron Lad unsuccessfully intervened to
    save the life of Maximilian, and it is thought that he
    thereby provoked the hostility of the Mexican leaders.
    No despatches from him have been recvived for a long
    time past, and nothing is known as to his condition or
    whereabouts. The Government bas taken means to
    ascertain certainly whether the Juarez Government
    have treated its

    The Prussian Army Commission, appointed to ex-
    amine the Chassepot rifle, after subjecting it to a series
    of practical tests, have reported against its adoption
    by the Prussian War Department.

    Garrabaldi has come to the conclusion that, considering all
    the circumstances, it was best to abandon, for the present,
    the movement against Rome, ‘The volunteers which had
    begun tr collect from all parts of Italy, who had invaded
    the Papal territory in several places, will disperse, but the
    movement is only delayed, nut abandoned forever. V’repar-
    ations for another great movement will be pursued with
    activity, and Garrabaldi himself expresses his firm belief
    in the success of the next movement.

    A Buffalo despatchof July 29 says that the R. C.
    Vicar-General Gleason, administrator of the diocese,
    refused to perform the feneral service over the re-
    mains of the Fenian os fps. who died recently from
    the effects of a wound received at the battle of
    Ridgway. The body was carried into the Cathedral
    by six sergeants in Fenian uniform; bat upon re-
    fysal of the clergy to perform service, he was car-
    ried out again, followed by a large part of the
