    The Annual Rifle Competition will come off at the
    Rifle Range on Monday and Tuesday, the 19th and 20th
    instant.

    A rowing unteh, for $1,000 a side, bas been arranged
    between the Ward brothers, of New York, and a St.
    John, N. B. crew—the race to come off on Connecticut
    River, Springfield, on the L1th of September.

    The telegraphic news of the past week is of an unim-
    portant character. The Emperor Napoleon has been
    visiting the Emperor of Austria at Vienna, and the lat-
    ter is to return the visit. ‘The latest despatches report
    that the King of Greece threatened to commence eh
    tilities against Turkey on the Ist of September, unless
    the war of extermination ‘waged agxingt the Christians
    of Crete is stopped before that date. ‘Gold is advanc-
    ing in the United States—tho Inst quotation being 1404.

    That MeGee will haye a hard eontest in Montreal is
    uow apparent. The following, from the Montreal
    '* Daily News,” of Tuesday last, a warm supporter of
    Mr. McGee, will give the render an idea of the strength
    of Mr. Devlin: —

    “A mass meeting, called by Mr. Devlin, of his friends
    and supporters: was’ held yesterday evenmg-in Cha-
    hoillez Square. We euppose there were from four to
    five thousand phrsons present; and they were most en-
    thusiastic in their applause of Mr. Devlin. The meet-
    ing broke “up at such a late hour, that we would be un-
    ableto do justice to the eloquent speech delivered by
    the candidate, av‘ reserve it for the perusal of cur me |
    erato-morrow, WP may say that Mr. Devlin is serious-

    The funeral took’ place on Thursday, the 25th inst.
    The mother,Mrs, MeInnia,and brother of the deceased
    were removed from the old berying ground and were
    interred side by side in the new grounds near the
    church after the usual ceremony of the Catholic Church,
    May they rest in peace, Amen.

    At Mill Point, Michigan, of concussion of the spine, John

    ©, MeDonald, a native of St. Peters, P. KE Island, aged 27

    ym leaving a widow, and a large circle of friends to mourn

    At Kildare, Lot 4, on Wednesday the 24th mst., after an
    illness of two weeks, Mary the beloved wife of James O' Rourk
    in the 87th year of her age, She leaves a bereaved husband
    and ninechildren to mourn her loss —-May she rest in peace.

    P\HE MAILS for the United Kingdom, the neighboring
    Provinces, United States, &c., will, until] further notice,
    be made up and torwerded from the General Post Office,
    Charlottetown, as follows, viz :—~

    ForCanada, New Brunswick, and the United States, via |
    pet oi every TUESDAY and FRIDAY evening at 8
    o'clock. r
    For Nova Scotia, via Pictou, every MONDAY, WED-
    NESDAY and FRIDAY eyening at 8 o'clock.

    Mails for Great Britain, Newfoundland and the West
    Indies, every alternate MONDAY and WEDNESDAY
