    ‘w URRAY HARBOR ‘AND BELFAST

    DISTRICTS.

Tux Marray Harbor and Belfast Districts seem Âąo be
greatly puzzled to know who. their representatives will
be in the next House of Assemidy, From all we can
learn, however, we are inclived to think that Messrs.
Fletcher and Henderson—the one a staunch Liberal and

    the other..an .indepeadent ticket,-will be elected for}
Murray Hagbor, andthe choice, under the peculiey vir-}-

cumstances of the cage, which seem to render impossible the
return of two Liberals for that District, is the most judi-
elous that could.be made. The Liberals, if they split
their votes at all, will do best to give them to Mr. Hender-
son, ip preference to Mr. Prowse. Belfast-is also im a
quandary. Messrs. Davies, Laird, Duncan, and—it is
said-—-Col. Gray, are before the: District. ' Messrs.
Davies and Laird’s chances appear to us to be the best,
and we shall be very much mistaken if they do not both
lead off by handsome majornties. Mr. Davies can be
religd upon.as a thoroughly houeat and patriotic politi-
cian, and Mr, Laird as an uncompromising and formid.
able anti-Confederate, whose presence in the Legislature
will. always be a source of terror to Canadian agents
    and sympathisers, :

ecript. We are quite willing that our character should
any day be putin contrast with his own. We repeat,
we did not allude to his personal character at all, butsim-

our moral character, we hope he will do so in such a way

of appealing for protection against defamation of char-

Mr. ‘Clark too well to suppose that he will adopt a
manly course by risking an appeal to such a tribunal.—
Truly the electors (both Catholic and Protestant) are
making a wise choice in selecting the political bank-

when giving’ a plain statement of his past political

    F. Brecken, Esq., Hon. James Pope, and his brother,
Mr. W. H. Pope, taking part. The result,-as we learn,
was that Mr. Longworth arose and expressed his regret
to find that hid nomination was so likely to lead to a
division between the Conservatives; and saifl he had no
wish to oppose a brother member of the Governinent
unless the electors decidedly. ingisted upon it.
evinced hesitation and much indecision in accepting the
nomination. Upon this, the Confederates seized she
moment as fit for becoming Vety boistérous, with the visi-
ble intention of getting Mr. Longworth out of the way.
Mr. Secretary Haviland made.one of lis customary vx:

Fromwhat further we bave learned of what’ transpired,
it seems that what the little faction of Confederates
eould not do by numbers, they attempted to perform by
noise and rowdvism, although they scarcely amounted
to one in ten of the audience. Their prineiple seemed
to be that a sectidn of the constituency of Charlottetown,
however small, ought to be allowed to do as they please,
if they were only Confederates, and that if a man, once
arepresentative, had adopted a certain measure, opposed
and obnoxious to the great body of his constituents, he
was proscribed if tly did not indulze him in the advo-
eacy of it,and attempted to elect another in his place.
Mr. Langworth’s indecision rendered the adjournment
necessary, and we understand that unlese he spucdily
makes public his firm determination to a the nomin-
ation, a gentleman of sound anti-Confederate ptteciples,
as a second candidate, is to be bro forward and no-
minated on Thursday: Here, then, it seems, is a chance
for a clever man of reliable anti-Confederate and inde-
    pendent principles.

We have feceived from Mr. Daniel McDonald, of
Souris, an official repert of two Public Meetings held
in the First District of King’s County—the one at
Kollo Bay, and the other at ris—on the 22d and
93d instapt, but we are so crowded, and the no.ices
have been handed in Âąo late, that we cannot find room
tor them this weck. The Hon. Mr. Hensley and

ward Kickham, Esq., aro undoubtedly the favorites
in tho’ First District, and will be returned by handsome
majorities, at least so we judge from those meetings.

Parnce County.—We learn from the First District
that Messrs. Howlan and Conroy will be the
successful candidates. Two more. faithful repré-
    sentatives could not be selected by any constituency ;
and we wish them. success, even beyond their awn
most confident anticipations aad those ef their friends.
The Lapcrals’ should not, on aby account, split their
votes; for, unless they wish to meet with disaster and

A I have not been able, during the brief
period of ‘my Legislative connection with you, to per
form sich an amount ef public good as under « more
extended term of office, Taighs reasonably to ac-

fadvanee the jnterests of my constituents haye not bern
    exerted altogether in vain. :

I should have addrevsed'you at an earlier date on the

hopes that our Charlotretown » would
ent ve with Âąome plan of operation for the approach~
ng campaign, in which we might all co-operate—some
coinndon platform’ on which the friendĂ© of progress and

that ‘the Laud Qaystion and Kducation, the Fisheries
and Confederation, will occupy s prominent place in
the deliberations of our next Colonial Parliament, it
may hot, perhaps, be premature on my part to declare
even now, what my owe peculiar views on thuse several

I haye long indulyed the opimion—and am still of the
same belicf—that the laws relating to Education chould
be #o amended ns, among other improvements, to enable

    Such an alteration as 1
have here indicated would have been effected dering the
late Seesion had net Messrs. Laird and Hovwatt distinctly
clared that their constituenta would not submit to an
change in the Educational system of the Colony whicl
would involve the imposition of a single penny’s nddi-
tional ‘texation. Hence it was deemed adviealde—the
General Election being co near at hand—te defer the
further consideration of the subject uatil the people
should bave an opportunity of expressing an epimen
    thereon at the hustings.
The uncommon’natural facilities possessed by our Is-
and fishermen being rendered slaost nugatory by the
abregation of the Reciprovis Treaty, 1 will assrst in
any measure which may enable our people to compete
suecessially with the fishermen of the neighboring Re-

    public.
1 am still decidedly opposed to Confederation; and

other men, howsoever widely those sentiments, political
ot otherwise, may differ from my own; nevertheless, |
denv the right, in any case, of ** a emall minority of the
ie” to make laws for, or rule the majority. I
sball, therefore, oppove any party, Liberal or Conserva-
tive, who will attempt to join this Island in a Federal
Union with Canada. Who would deprive us of the in-
estimable privilege of making the laws that govern
us, sud surrender ourselves to tha ‘* tender
mercies" of a people whosw inordinate selfishness and
extravagance have already brought their own magnifivent
country to she very brink of kruptey, and whose
sectional animosities are fully as malignact ae were
those which provoked the late calawisous war ia the
United Sratee, and drenched that emce prosperous
country in the blood of a milliew of ite own sebjvcts.

Tf time and other circumstances permit, I will call
upon you aeverally before the slestion comes off, whem
We can enter more fully ipto any of the pablic questions
of the day, than itis possible to do through a newapa
