    Claims the praise they give,

Not that which men do worthily, |
but that they do suecessfully, is what!
    history makes haste to record

We see farthest into the tuture—and
that is not far—when we most care
ful'y consider the facts of the pres-|
    ent.

Sense shines with a double luster
when it is setin humility. An abie yet
humble man, isa jewel worth a king-

    dom.

    True modesty blushes for everthing

that is eriminal; false modesty is
    ashamed of everything unfashion-
    al

It a man have love in his_ heart,
he may talkin broken language, but
it will be eloquence to those who
    listen.

Any man mav do a casual act of
good nature, but a continuation of
them sows itis a part of his tempera
    ment,

Without good breeding the scholar is
    a peda: t: the phi‘osop ier, & cynic . the

soldier, a brute; sod every man dis-
    agreexble.
    Reflect upon your present blessing-

of which every man has many; not on
your past misfortunes, of which all men
    have

Axm'‘le may be bright while the
heart iasad. The rainbow is beautiful
in the air, while beneath is the moan-
    ing of the sex.

    There

    Orie

    are never inthe world two
opinions alike. no more than two hairs
or two grains, The most universal
    quality is diversity.

These are goo! rules: Do not all that
    you can do, spend not all that you have;
helieve not all thas you hear; tell not
    all that y>u know.

Asceremony is the invention of wise
men to keep fools at a distavce; so good
breeding is an e xpedicnt to make fools
    and wise men equais.

There is no policy like politensss ;-
and a good manoer is the best thing iu
the world, either to get a good name, or
    supply the wantof ir.

A wise man will make haste to for-
give, because he kaows the full value
of time, and will not suffer it to pass
    away in unnessary pain.

False friendship, like the ivy decays
and ruins the walls it imbraces; but
true friendship gives new life and ani-
mation to the of ject it supports.

Whois therein the world that can
    boastot having fathomed and_thor-
    oughly penetrated the intricate and
    eve!-changing nature of a woman?

    Trouble springs from idleness, and
grievous toils from needless ease; many
witbout labor would live by their own
wits only, but they break for want of
    stock.

    —————> 4) ——
    Agricultural Notes.

Stop the churning when the butter
isin granuls about the size of wheat
    kernels.

Cabl are are splendid winter feed for
poultry, and should be saved for that
    purpose.

    Milk for cheese makiog—whether
    whole or pertly skimmed—should be
    pertectiv sweet.

    As ordinarily piled, manure loses
much of its velue. If a shelter cannot be
given i*, cart it on tothe field soon after
    it is mede.

The trouble with long potatoes is that
they tend to become pointed at the end,
and this is the beginning of their
    speedy degeneration in yield and
    quality.

Be sure your stables are thoroughly
ventilated, r move all droppiogs im-
mediate lv, and freely use ubsorbents
    and deodorizers—such as sawdust, dry
eurth or cui straw, never omittiog a
    liberal use of plaster.

Fur superior to the well water is
that of some spring which is brought
to various places in and around the
farm builiiag from a neighboring hiil
side. There are very many places
where pipes can be laid. There is a
great loss sustained by farmers giving
orallowing their stock to seek and
drink water that is at the point of freez-
    ing.
