    lectured before the Asseciation, on Thursday
    evening, on “ England's Illustrious Dead.” He
    introduced his subject by dwelling upon the res-
    pous.bility resting upon every mau, t benefit the
    age in which he lives; and he who dees this lives
    vot merely for the thes in which be dgures pen

    of (ts Comprehenusiveness, treated it under a cer-
    tain classification. He first referred to the emi-
    vent Poets of England. Under thisclass we find
    such inen as Shakspeare, Milton, Cowper, &e.

    the lecturer, while mentioning the names of se-
    veral worthy of an extended notice, dwelt parti-
    ealarly upou the life aud career of Chatham, the
    elder, ove of the greatest of English erators and
    statesmen of the Jstheentury. From this class
    Mr. Sprague passed to glance at Military Charac-
    ters. Newwoninthe navy, and Woite and Wellirg-
    ton wy the army, were patticularly specified, from
    a host that might be uaihed. Time prevented the
    lecturer froin even meutloning the many eminent
    Philosophers aud Divines of England. The lee-
    ture Was Composed in ali elegant style and deliv
    ered (reading is the usual practice with lecturers
    before the Association) ina very eloquent manner.
    The whole was most creditable to Mr, Sprague,

    TERRIBLE BOILER FXPLOSION.
    HakeisburG, Penn., Feb. 27.—A terrfie ex-
    plosion occurred last evening at the furnace of J
    & H. J- Neiliy in’ Middletown, resulting in the

    | complete destruction of the furnace, the death of

    five men and the wounding of six others. There
    were eight botlers in the furnace. One was rais-
    ed through the building and carried 500) yards
    Lodging in the Penosylvania canal. The other
    voilers were carried iu various directions, some
    of them passing through houses and others build

    Sec. 9.—All dirt, sawdust, soot, ashes, cinders.
    shavings, hair, manure. oyster, clam or lobster
    shells, waste water, animal or vegetable substances
    rubbish or filth of any kind, iu any house, ware-
    house, cellar, yard or other place within the City
    which the Mayor and Board of Health deems in
    jurious to the health of the City, shall be removed
    by the ewner or occupant of such honse or otber
    place as aforesaid, within twenty-four hours, o1
    such other time as the Mayor and Board of Health
    shall deem reasonable. and after notice in writing
    to that effect served personally npon the owner or
    occupant, or posted on the premises, if he or they
    shall neglect or refuse to remove the same, then
    such removal shall be made under the direction of
    the Mayor and Board of Health, and the expense
    thereof shall be borne by such owner or occupant,
    and, in addition thereto, shal! be subject to a penalty
    got exceesing Sixty shiliiugs for every such neg-
    lect or refusal.

    Sec 10.—If the manure or soil of any stable or
    other collection of refuse matter be allowed to ac-
    cumulate till it becomes oflensive, the owne;
    thereof, or the person ou whose premises the sume
    may be, shall, within twenty-four hours after being
    notified, remove the same, or cause it to be re
    moved, and on neglecting or refusing so to do, the
    owner of such manure, soil or refuse watter, or the
    person ou Whose premises the same may be, shal!
    be subject toa fine not exceeding Forty Shillings
    for each and every day such manure, soil or refuse
