    A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS.

It is related of the late eminent engineer,
Mr. Brunel, that he had more perilous es
capes from violent death than fall to the lot
ef most men. At the autect of his career, |
when acting as assistant-engineer to his fa-

at Western line was finished and at!
work, he used frequently to ride upon the
engine with the driver, and occasionally he
drove it himself. One day, when passing
through the Box Tunnel apon the engine at
considerable speed, Branel thought he dis-
cerned between bim and the light some ob-
ject standing on the same line of road along |
which bis engine was travelling. He in-!
stautly turned on the full steam and dashed

    The sarrounding |

gome time doubted whether the evin had
really fallen into the windpipe. After the
Japse of fifteen days, Sir B. Brodie met Mr.
Key in consultation, and they concurred in
the opinion that most probabiy the balf-so-
vereign was lodged at the bottom of the right
bronehus. The day after, Mr. Brunel placed
himselt in a prone position on his face upon
some chairs, and bending his head and neck
downwards, he distinctly felt the coin drop
towards the glottis. A violent cough ensued,
and on resuming the erect posture he felt as
if the object again moved downwards into
the chest. Here was an engineering dif.
ficulty, the like of which Mr. Brunel had
never before encountered. The mischief was

urcly mechanical ; a foreign body had gone
jnto his breathing apparatus, and must be
removed if at all, by sume mechanical ex-
pedient. Mr. Brunel was, however, equa
tu the oceasion. Ue bad an apparatus con-
structed, consisting of a platform which
moved upon @ binge in the centre. Upon
this he had himself strapped, and the body
was then inverted in order that the coin

    might drop downward by its own weight, }

and so be expelled. At the first experiment
the coin slipped towards the glottis, but it
eaused such an alarming fit of convulsive
coughing and appearance of chosking tha
danger was apprehended, and the experiment
    was discontinued.

‘'wo days after, on the 25th, the operation
of tracheotomy was performed by Sir Benj
Brodie, assisted by Mr. Key, with the intea-
tion of extracting the coin by the forceps, if
possible. Twu attempts to do so were made
without success. The introduction of the
forceps into the windpipe on the second oc-
casion was attended with so excessive a degree |
of irritationg that it was felt the experiment
could not be eontinued without imminent
danger to life. The incision in the windpipe
was, however, kept open, by means of a quill
or tube, antil May fs, by which time Mr. |
Branel's strength bad sufficiently recovered |
to enable the original experiment to be re-
peated. He was again strapped to his appa-
ratus; his body was inverted ; his back wus
struck gently ; and he distinctly felt the coin

redness vanishes, and granules of healthy flesh begin
to take the place of the discharged matter. This
process goes on more or less rapidly, uutil the orifice
is filled up with sound material and the ulcer is
    radically cured. }

    A Word to Mothers.
    | The young are the most frequent sufferers from |
    | external injuries, and therefore every mother ehould
‘have this healing preparation constantly at hand.
‘It is an absolute specific for burns, sprains, and
bruites, and quickly removes the encrusted sores
_which sometimes disigure the beads and faces cf
    children.

    Heated Blood, Scorbutic Eruptions.

This Ointment is universally resorted to with the
happiest effects by seafarers for easing and curing
the skin diseases resulting from the continued use
of salted provisions. It is largely and successfully
employed by sailors of ail nations for curing the
seurvy and the annoying er=ptions which spring from
    |everheated blood. Its fine cooling properties are |
invaluable in inflammation, ulcers, or sores, of the
legs or feet, and it gives greater ease than any other
application to the aches and darting pains, produced
by varicose veins or neuralgia, resulting from expo-
    sure te cold or wet,

Wounds, Bruises. Burns. and Scalds. |

The exrent to which mechanical! and manufacturing
industry in this country bas reached, is greater than
in any other, therefore the liability to bodily accident
bas increased in the same ratio. Accidents are la-
mentably frequent, and often when seemingly trivial
in themselves, are made to end fatally from want of
due attention and proper remedies. The most |
powerful curative ever applied to wounds, bruises,
burns, or sores of any sort, is Holloway’s Ointment.
Every tradesman, in fact, every man te whom an ac-
cident may happen — and who is there exempt ?—~
should be provided with it against the physical dan-
gers which, though never foreseen, are of hourly
    oceurrence.

    Bad Legs, Piles. and Fistulas.

The cures which this Ointment efects in healing
Uicers of long standing, and which have resisted all
other applications, as weliasin curing bad legs, Piles
and Fistulas, have been so countless and #o notorious
throughout the world, that any effort to give an!
adequately detailed statement of their number or
character would be vain. It is sufficient to say that
the Ointment hus never proved ineflicacious.

is a concomitant of the disease.

Disease, like the storm, gives unmistakeable signs
    of its approach. At first the threatened patient ex- {
periences a slight discomfort, this fullowed with pain
te a greater or less extent, and gther symptoms ful-
low in rapid succession. It is in this condition of
the system where Radway’s Keady Relief will be
fuund all-potent. Its administration, either inter-
pally or externally, as the seat of pain indicates,
will arrest the progress of the threatened diseuse,

    comfort.

If people, on the first indication of uneasiness or
pain, either slight or severe, would take a dose ol
Radway’s Ready Relief, not one in a thousand weuld
    ever be troubled with sickness.

Keady Relief be freely used, and, in a short time, all
pain and aneasiness will cease, and the threatened
    disease expelled from the system.

With either of the above diseases, the uso of RAD-

    ure.

    “TIT CURES SO MANY DISEASES,

*« And therefore I’ll have none of it,”’ says the skep-
tic; new we appeal to the common sense of any rea-
sonable being who has had the least experience in
medicine taking, or business relations with l’bysi-
cians, if this is sound reasoning.

    RADWAY’S READY RELIEF

Is not recommended by us, nor prescribed for so
many varieties of disease as every physician in the
practice of medicine, prescribes Calomel, Mercury,
Quinine, Morphine, Opium and other favorite hobbys
of the profession. It is a well kn»wo fact that in
ninety cases out of one hundred, no matter what may
be the name of the disease or the condition of the
patient, Calomel forms the important and the most
active agent of the prescription: and ifthe symp-
toms of the disease are such as to leave any doubt in
the mind of the physician as to arriving at a decided
conclusion what to give, he gives Calome!. This is
an ancient landmark of the profession, which no in-
novation has ever been suffered to alter.

tacks of all malarious, contagious and infectious dis-
eases, we have the facts to establish the truth of our
statements, acknowledged by thousands who have
proved its unfailing powers on their own persons. Go
where you will, speak of Radway’s Ready Relief in
any assemblage of persons, same one or more will
bear witness of deriving benefit from its use.

    IN MILITARY CAMPS.

There is no place so well calculated to test the use-
fulness of a specific medicine as a military camp.
Kadway’s Ready Kelief bas been used in almost every
camp throughout the Grand Army of the Union with
the happiest success. Letters from Br gale and Re- |
gimental surgeens, oflicers, and privates assure us |
that Radway’s Ready Relicf has contributed more to
the protection of the troops against disease, and ti
the use and comfort of the sick than all other med-
icines used or means suggested by the medical au-
    thorities.

    MOFFAT’S LIFE PILLS

    AND

    PHG:NIX BITTERS.

HESE Medicines have now been before tie
public for a period of THIRTY YEARS, and
during that time bave maintained a high character
in almost every part of the globe for their extraor~
dinary and immediate power of restoring perfeck
health to porsens suffering under nearly every kind
of disease to which the human frame is lable.

    IN MANY THOUSANDS

of certificated instances, they have even rescued guf-
ferers from the very verge of an untimely grave,
after ail the deceptive nostrums of the day had ut-
terly failed; and to many thousands they have-
permaneutly secured that uniform enjoyment of
health without which life itself is but a partial bless-
ing. So great, indecd, has their efficacy invariably
and infallibably proved that it has appeared scarcely
less than miraculous to these who were acquainted
with the beautifully philosophical principles upon,
which they are compounded, and upon which they
consequently act. It was to their wanifost and seu-
sible » ction in purifying the springs and channels of
life, and indulging them with renewod tone and
vigor, that they were indebted tor their name.

Unlike the bost of pernicious quackeries which
boast of vegetable ingredients, the LIFE MEDI-
CINES are purely and sulely vegets le; and contain.

    THE WORLD'S GREAT REMEDY FOR
    Scrofula and Scrofulous Diseases.
From Emery Edes, a well-known merchant of Ox-
    Jord, Maine,

«“T have sold large quantities of your SARSAPA-
RILLA, but never yet one bottle which failed of the
desired effect and full satisfaction to those who took
it. As fast as our people try it, they agree there has
been no medicine like it before in our community.”

neither Mercury nor Antimony vor Arseme nor any
other mineral, in any form: whatever. They are en-
tirely composed of extracts from rare and powerful
plants, the virtues of which, though long known to
several Indian tribes, and recently tv some eminent
pharmacentical chemists, are altogetber unknown to
the ignorant pretenders to medleal science ; and were
never before administered in sc happily efficacious
    a combination.

The first operation is to loosen from the corte of the
stomach and bowels the various impurities and crudi-
ties constantly settling round them; end to remove
the hardened faces whieh collect in the convolu-
tions of the small intestines. Other medicines only
partially cleanse these, and leave such collected
masses behind as to produce habitual Costiveness
with all its train of evils, or sudden Diarrhea
with its imminen dangers. This fact is well-known
to all regular anatowists who examine the human
bowels after death; and hence theprejudices of
these well informed men against the quack medi-
cines of the age. The second effect of the VEGE-

    Eruptions, Pimples, Blotches, Pustules, Ul-
cers, Sores, and all Diseases of the Skin.
    From Rev. Robt. Stratton, Bristol, England, }

«“T only do my duty to yon and the public, when |
I add my testiniony to that you publish of the me- |
Gicinal virtues of your SARSAPARILLA. My daugh-
ter, aged ten, had an afflicting humor in her ears,
eyes, and hair for years, tyich we were unable to
cure until we tried your SARSAPARILLA. Sle has
    been well for some mouths.”

From Mrs. Jane FE. Rice, a wellImown and much-
esteemed lady af Dennisvitle, Cape May Co,, N.d.
“ My daughter has suffered for a year past with a

scrofulous eruption, whieh was very troablesome,

Nothing afforded any relief until we tried your

SARSAPARKILLA, which soon compiectely cured her.”

From Charles P. Gage, F3q., of the widely-known
Gaye, Murray & Co., manufacturers of enamelled
    papers in Nashua, N.

“TI had for several years a very troublesome
humor in my face, whielf grew coustautly worse
until it disfigured my features and beeame an intol-
erable aMiction, 1 tricd almost every thing a man
could of both advice and medicine, but without any
relief whatever, until 1 took your SARSAPARILLA.
It immediately made my faee worse, as you told me
it micht fora time; but in a few weeks the new
skin began to form under the blotches, and con-
tinued until my face is as smooth as any body’s,
and IL am without any symptoms of the disease that
1 know of. I enjoy perfect health, and without a
doubt owe it to your SARSAPARSLLA.”

    Rrysipelas— General Debility— Purify the
    Blood.

From Dr. Robt. Sawin, Houston St., New York.
“Dr. AYER. I seldom fail to remove ruptions
and Scrofulous Sores by the persevering use of your
SARSAPARILLA, and IT have just now cured an attack
of Malignant Krysipelas with it. No alterative we
possess equals the SAKSAPARILLA you have sup-
plied to the profession as well as to the people.”
From J. F. Johnston, Esq., Wakeman, Ohio,
«For twelve years, I had the yellow Erysinetas
on my right arm, during which time I tried al! the
celebrated physicians I could reach, and took hun-
dreds of dollars worth of medicines. The ulcers
were so bad that the cords became visible, and the
doctors decided that my arm must be amputated. I
began taking your SARSAPARILLA. Took two bot-
tles, and some of your PILis. Together they have
cured me. T am now as well and soundas any body.
Being in a public place, my case is known to ever

both of the primary and secondary G pe, and eifec-
tual in some eases that were too obstinate to yield
to other remedies, I do not know what we can em-

Mr. Chas. 8. Van Liew, y Be Brunswick, N.J.,
had dreadéy} ulcers on his legs, caused by the abuse
of mercury, or mercurial disease, which grew more
and more aggravated for years, in spite of every |
remerly or treatment that could be seplet, until the ©

ersevering use Of AYER’S SARSAPARILLA relieved

1im. Few cases can be found more invetcrate and
distressing than this, and it took several dozen
    bottles to cure him.

    Leucorrhea, Whites, Female ‘Weakness,

    Irregularity, Leucorrhea, Internal Ulceration, and

TABLE LIFE MEDICINES is to cleanse the kid
neys and the bladder; and, by this means, the liver
ind lungs, the healthful action of which entirely
depends upon the regularity of the urinary organs,
The blood, whieh takes its red color from the ayency
of the liver and lungs, befere it passes into the
heart, being thus purified by them, and nourished
vy food coming trom a clean stomach, courses freely
through the veins, renews every part of the system,
and triumphantly mounts the banner of beaith in
    the blooming cheek.

The following are among the distressing variety
of human diseasesin which the VEGETABLE LIFB
MEDICINES are well known to be infallhole.

DYSPEPSIA, by thoroughly cleansing the first
znd second stomachs, and creating a fiyw of
    healthy bile, instead of the stale and acrid kind;
Flatuleacy, Less of Appetite, Heartburn, Headache,
    Restlessness, Ill-Temper, Langour, and Melancholy,
which are the general symptoms of Dyspepsia, wilh
vanish, as & natural consequence of its cure,

COSTIVENESS, by cleansing the whole length of
the intestines with a selventprocess, and without vio-
lence: all violent purges leave the bowols coztive
    within two days.

DIARKKH@A and CHOLERA, by removing the
sharp acrid fluids by which these complaints are oc-
casioned, and by prombting the lubricative secretion
    of the mucuots membrane.

FEVERS of all kinds, by restoring the blood to a
regular e:rculation, through the process ef perspi-
ration in such cases, and the thorough solution of
    al] intestinal obstruction io otbers.

The Lire Mepicines have been known to cure

theumatism permapently in three weeks, and Gout
in half that time, by removing local inflammation
irom the muscles and ligaments of the joints.

Dropsies of all kinds, by freeing and strengthen-
ing the kidneys and bladder: they operate most ue-
lightfully on these important organs, and bence they
have ever been fuund a certain remedy for the
    worst cases of (Gravel,

Also Worms, by dislodging from the turnings of
the bowels the slimy watter to which these creatures
    adhere.

Asthma and Consumption, by relieving the air
vessels of the lungs from the wucous which even
slight colds will occasion, and which, it not removed,
beeomes hardened, and produces those dreadful dis-
    eases.

Scurvy, Ulcers and Inveterate Sores, by the perfect
purity which these LIFE MEDICINES give to the
    blood, and all the humors.

Scorbutic Eruptions and Bad Complezions, by their
alternative effect upon the fluids that feed the skin,
and the morbid state of which occasions all erup-
tive complaints, sallow, cloudy, and other disagree-
    able complexions.

The use of these Pills for a very short time will
effect an entire cure of Salt Rhewm, and a striking
improvement in the clearness of the skin. Commcen
Colds and Influenza will always be cured by one
dose, or by two even in the worst cases.

PILES. As a remedy for this most distressing
and obstinate malady, the VEGETABLE LIFE ME-
DICINES deserve a distinct and emphatic recom-
mendation. It is well-known to bundreds in this

‘city, that the former proprietor of these valuable

Medicines was himself afllicted with this complaint
for upwards of THIRTY-FivE YEARS, and that he tried
in vain every remedy prescribed within the whole
compass of the Materia Medica. He, however, at
length tried the Medicine which is now offered to the
public, and he was cured in a very short time, after
his recovery had been pronounced not only impro-
bable, but absolutely impossible, by ony human

    means.
    FEVER AND AGUE,

For this scourge of the western country these Me-
dicines will be found a safe, speedy, and certain re-
medy. Other medicines leave the system subject
to a return of the disease—aclre by there medi-

    | cines is permanent—TRY THEM, BE SATISFIED,

    AND BE CURED.

    BRilious Fevers and Liver Complaints,

General Debility, Loss ov Arrerite, AN» DISEAR 28
or FemaLes—these medicines have been used with
the most beneficial results in cases of this description:
—Kuiye’s Evu and Scrorvuca, in its worst forms,
yields to the mild yet powertul action of these re-
markable Medicines, Nicgutr Sweats, Nervous De-
uiurry, Nervous Compiagyts of all kinds, Paipi-
TATION OF THE Heart, PaPSrgn’sCouic, arespeedily

    cured.
    MERCURIAL DISEASES,
Persons whose constitutions have become impaired
by the injudicious use of Mercury, will find these
Medicines a perfect cure, as they never fail to era-
dicate from the system all the effects of Mercury
infinitely sooner than the most powerful prepara-
tions of Sarsaparilla. A single trial will place them
beyond the reach of competition, in the estimation
    of every patient.
    BE CAREFUL OF COUNTERFEITS,
Several have lately been discovered, and their
    | nefarious authors arrested, both in the city of New
