Catholies, either Clergy or Laity—administers in
© following article a well merited rebuke to the

spotted i tred. and paar ipered Orangemen of the

North of Ireland. It appears that a large gather-
    y—or “ demonstration,” it is ealied—was lately

held at Delfast to euable the Orangemen whe

vomposed if, te give utterance to a complaint of
their “ wrongs.” The Times thus speaks of it :—
    * A demonstration in these days! What about,
ind by whom ? OF course it is in Ireland lt.
too, we go by the rule that they whe have the
least reason te eouplain often make the most noise,
it not tobe surprised atan Orange Demen-
stration at Belfast. But what quarrel have the
Protestants of Belfast to make with their Govern-
ment and their country?) The Episcopalians are
established, and the Presby terians are establishe d,
and the ouly people not established are the Papists,
You can earu public mouey there by preaching up
the Prelacy, and by denouncing Prelaey, but not
a six pence if the Dope is Your man. Yet the
friends and the foes of British Episeopacy are
going te shake hands over their little differences,

and have a monster meeting m the Botanie Gar-
dens of Belfast to prove to the world that this isa
case for taking away the Papist’s one talent aud
adding it to the Protestant ten. Dr. Cook, Mo-
derator, salaried Protessoer, aud salaried distribut-
or of the Parliamentary Grant, is to prove that

he and his fellow Protestants are ap il-used,
plundered, trampled-upon race. Peers and clergy-
men are to tell their sufferings, and it is expected
that fifteen thousand round Christians will pur-
chase tickets of admission for the privilege of

pouring their serrows into one another's)
bosoms. We wait with impatience for an expla- |
nation of the miseries which require so vast a
shower of tears. What has happened to the)
“Black North?” Is it diminution of dignity or|
of substance? There are troubles all over the
world, nowhere greater than in this busy, erowd-
ed, throbbing, conyulsed centre of the British |
empire, The Sulina mouth of the Danube under |
Russian care was not more strewed with wrecks!
than is this little sea of life. There is a stery in)
every face. But we get together; we go te
ehurch; we go to the market; the “ meet,” the
flower show, the ball, or any other pretence of a,
gathering, and we put on our best coat and best |
looks. Among ua, with some effort we subseribe
a little gaiety, we resolve nem. con. to be happy
for anu hour, and we turn eut trouble by acelama-
tion. But there, at Belfast, we verily believe the |
most prospering town in the empire, they are

    |

i list of grievances against the present state of

    things.

around them. Take the poor fellow, ene of a

man, a year ago, had regular work, bard by. He
had a nice house, and tidy furniture, and good
élothes for Sunday as well as week-day. There
was plenty of money for schooling, for books, for
newspapers, for toys, exeursions, and holidays.
Bisides all this, there was a round anm at the!
savings-bank, and something in a building fund, al
loan or two to friends, and not a penny due at the
shop. Now it is all nothing.

the savings-bank, nothing in the elub, nothing in |

be pawned or sold. There is nothing on the shelf,

    The children are schoolless, supperless,
    The father goes
    does labour-
ing work for a few hours, and reecives at the end
of the week about a shilling or fifteenpence a head
for the family. Heishungry, cold, weak, wearied,
and helpless, being one of hundreds of thousands
in like evil case, all involved in one utter exhaustion
ef means and paralysis of strength. It may he
pertly said that this is only physical misery, the lot
of nations, of classes, of half the human race. But
in this case a man with eyes may see the deeay

    shoeless, and almost sleepless.

of the mugele, the irritation of the temper, the!

weakening of the mind, and the werm eating its
way tito the moral principle. This is toe likely
a moral wreck, as well as a ruined household.
What we have desertbed is Laneashire. But,
while life, strength, and even goodness are there
ebbing away, the Orangemen of Lretand are njeet
ing at Belfast to proclaim to the world their ow),
    tus of wrongs.
