Haxirax, Dec. 12.—Her Majesty’s troop ship Resistance

„ That to continue in the House of Assembly any member who
as forfeited his seat, by the acceptance of an office of emolument
under the Government. would not only be a violation of the law,

arrived here on Tuesday last, in 24 days from Barbad
with the 33d Regiment on board, bound to St. John, N. B
She was detained here by the difficulty of procuring a per-

son of the year; one however having been obtained, she
sailed yesterday morning, accompanied by H. M. steamer
    Columbia.

The Jamaica Assembly, we perceive from late dates, con-
templates the disbanding the Militia of the Island. A inem-
ber has introduced a bill into the Legislature, having for its
object the release ofthe public from the onerous duty of
playing soldier once a quarter. This we think a most in-
judicious measure, as the Island is far from being in so tran-
quila state as to warrant an immunity from all military in-
    terference.

: The news from the Island, generally speaking, is far from
indicating a satisfactory state of things.

    H. M. Steamer Hermes, Lieut. Washington Carr, in 11
days from Halifax, N.S. arrived at Kingston on the 3d Nov.,
having on board the new Bishop of Jamaica, the Right Rev.
Dr. Aubrey Speicer, who will forthwith assume the duties
of his diocese. This vessel touched off Bermuda.

    i. M. Brig Ringdove arrived at Kingston on the 15th,
in six days from Port au Prince. She reports that every
thing was quiet there when she left.

The Barbara Ann, Praught, arrived on Tuesday last, from
St. Johu’s, N. FE. Reports the toilowing vessels dixposed of, at
remunerating prices, viz; the Kate, Isle of Stye, Eclipse, Lu-
ceina. Elza aud N ghtingale, of Charlottetown; aud the Ann
and Sisters, of St. Peter’s, P. £2. Island.

but_also a sacrifice of the trust reposed by the people in their re-
presentatives, and that the members for this Royalty are expect-
ed to use their endeavours for carrying out the intention of the
law in such cases made and provided.

Mr. Montgomery, the only Member of the House present,
observed that if this Resolution had not been mooted, it was
his firm intention to have acted up to the principle of it, As
it had happened, however, he was proud that his constitu-
ents approved of the course which he had intended to adopt.
Many other gentlemen spoke to the Resolution, and depre-
cated, in the strongest manser, any attempt which might be
made by those who had been appointed to office under the
Government to retain at the saine time those offices and
    their seats in the House.

Phat the Representatives of this Royalty are expected by their
constituents, in the discharge of their legislative duties, to sup-

this extraordinary production, e g., the Repeal ot the Le-
gislative Union between Great Britain and Lreland—the ua-
ture and conditions of the original Grants of this Islind—the
policy or impolicy of the establishinentof a Court o Escher ,
aud other matters intimately connected with the vered lana
question—the right of the subject to petition the Crown, &e.
