Her hands were clasped in front of her,and her pale, proud face bore traces of passion and of suffering. She crossed the hall with a gentle sound, like the rustling of autumn leaves, and then, turning her lovely and unutterably sad eyes upon me, she said:— ‘‘I am the plaintive and sentimental, the beautiful and ill-used. I have been forsaken and betrayed. I shriek in the night-time and glide down passages. My antecedents are highly respectable and generally aristocratic My tastes are esthetic. Old vak furniture like this would do, with a few more coats of mail and plenty of tapestry. Will you not take me?’’ Her voice died away in a beantiful cadence as she concluded, and she held it her hands as in supplication. As my brain became clearer, stimulated by the exclamations of Matilda, 1 began gradually to recollect the events of the night. There was the door through which my supernatural vis- itors had filed. There was the circle of chalk, with the hieroglyphics round the edge There * was the cigar-box and brandy bottle which had been honored by the attentions of Mr. Abrahams. But the seer himself—where was he? and what was this open window, with a rope running ont of it? And where, oh, where, was the pride of Goresthorpe Grange, the glorious plate which have been the de- lectation of generations of D’Odds? And why was Mrs. D. standing in the gray light of dawn, wringing her hands and repeating her monotonous refrain? It was only very gardually that my misty brain took these things in, and grasped the connection between them. Reader, I have never seen Mr. Abra- hams since; I have never seen the plate stamped with the resuscitated family crest; hardest of all, I have never caught a glimpse of the melancholy specter with the trailing garments, nor do I expect that I ever shall. In fact, my night’s ex- periences have cured me of my mania for the supernatural, and quite reconciled me to inhabiting the humdrum nineteenth- century edifice on the outskirts of Lon- don which Mrs. D. has long had in her mind’s eye. As to the explanation of a!l that occurred—that is a matter which is open to several surmises. That Mr. Abrahams, the ghost hunter, was identical with Jemmy Wilson, alias the Nottingham crackster,is considered more than probable at Scotland Yard, and certainly the de- scription of that remarkable burglar tal- lied very well with the appearance of my visitor. The small bag which I have described was picked up in a neighboring field next day, and found tc contain choice ssoriment ot jimmies and center- bits. Footmarks, deeply iinprinted in the mud on either side of the moat, showed that an accomplice from below had re- ceived the sack of precious metals which had been let down through the open window. No donbt th pair of scoundrels, while looking reund for a job, had everheard Jack Brocket’s indiscreet in- quiries, and had promptly availed them- selves of the tempting opening. And now as to my less substantial vis- itors, and the curious, grotesque vision which I had enjoyed—am I to lay it dowr to any real power over ocouit mat- ters possessed by my Nottingham friend? For a long time I was doubtful upon the poi and eventually endeavored to solve it by consulting a well-known aualyst and medical man, sending him the few drops of the so-called of Lucoptolyeus which remained in my vial. I append the letter which I received from him, only too happy to have the opportunity of winding up my little narrative by the weighty words of a man of learning. essence “ARUNDEL STREET. ‘‘Dear Sir,—Your very singular case has interested me extremely. The bottle which you sent contained a strong solution of chloral, and the quantity which you describe yourself as having swallowed must have amounted to at least eighty grains of the pure hydrate. This would, of course, have reduced you to a partial state of insensibility, gradually going on te complete coma. In this senti-unconsci- ous state of chloralism it is not unusual for circumstantial and bizarre visions to present themselves—more especially to individuals unaccustomed to the use of the drug. You tell me in your note your mind was saturated with ghogtly literature, and that you had long taken a morbid interest in classifying ami re- calling the various forius in which sappa- ritions have been said t> appear. A Deep Snake Story. “The wife of a well-known the Narrabri district had a startling ex- perience the other day with snakes. At different times two large brown snakes had been seen about the home and gar- selector in den, but they had always imanazed to effect a retreat before they could be killed. The fact that these unpleasant neighbors were so close caused the lady no small anxiety on behalf of her only son, a boy of four years. One day she left the boy asleep in his cot upon tho verandah, her household duties, when she was at- tracted to the back door by a curlous buzzing noise, and to her horror she saw the brown snake there, standing almost straight up, waving to and fro, and giv- ing forth the noise which had attracted her attention at first. The snake seized hold of the woman's dress, and she, be- ing too terror-stricken to resist, was dragged forth from the house and across the yard. When they arrived at the un- derground tank, about 100 yards fromm the house, the woman saw the reason of this strange visit; for there was her Lt- tle boy (he had strayed from his bed and fallen in the tank) the other snake hold- ing him by the hair of his head, strain- ing every muscle to keep the child from drowning, while his mate brought help."’ Work for the Girls, Do not let the girls grow up iu igpor- ance of household work. Many ec: ses have been investigated, and among others that f Mrs, Rean y, of Ashland, Wis., who was sured of this form of trouble by the use of a kidney medicine known as Dodd’s Kid- vey Pills, which originaied in Canada, but has now become w:dely knowa and used througheut the western States. A list of flowers should be made out, each one with a number. Oni separate slips of paper write the name of the flowers with its corresponding number, until you haye used each one on the list. Give each guest one of the slips, or have a draw for them, and provide them with crayons and sheets of paper. Give fifteen minutes for the making of the flowers, then col- lect the drawings and pin them up about the room. As the names of the flowers are read from the list guesses are given as to which flower among the drawings represent it. Another pleasant game is called matching quotations. Well-known lines are written on slips of paper and then divided into bits, each part having three or four words. These fragments are pinned about the room on furniture, cur- tains, and hangings, and person takes one and starts out to find the other parts that will make the quotation com- plete. Sometimes the quotations may con- sist of an entire line, with the second line forming the other half to be looked for.— Philadelphia Times each The Martian’s Mistake.
