Baseburuer H.R.Large6PCo Canada's leading Confectionery Manufacturers, held in theIMcunt Royal Hotel, Montreal, on Friday, February 8th. It was pointed out that these taxes. which are a heavy burden, borne only the sirgar-using manufacturers and the public are costing Confectionery and Biscuit manufacturers in excess of there- quarters oi a million dollars a year; a tremendous burden to Ono group oi Industries that other Industries do not share. Manufacturers report- ed that these taxes, coupled with the sales tax, cost them from nine to twelve percent of their total cost _ oi their total cost of production. The Sugar and Glucose taxes alone cost- ing leading manufacturers from $15,000 to $40,000 a year. It was stated that these taxes represented approvximately u twenty-fifth per- cent tax on the Industries’ chief raw material. The Confectioners present took vigorous. can ption to the fact that the Government had singled out their Industry-manufacturing a _ necessity of modern life-and had on it a much greater per- centage oi taxation than that borne other Industries. It was demon- s rated that the Ccnfectione In- dustry is by no means an in ustry earning large profits. On the con- trary, many leading firms have suf- fered severe losses for several years past, or had their profits, it any, materially reduced. The manufacturers agreed that it has_been impossible to raise prices when the taxes were introduced, to take care of this burden, partly due to the penny and nickle units in which so much Confectionery is sold, but principally due to the fact that any attempt to raise the price in thes depressed times would seriously curtail already depleted volume.
