MORAL TEACHING IN CHINA. ! In China, for twenty centuries past, the great object of moral teaching has been to inculcate reyerence for amces- tors, devotion to parents and kindness to brothers and sisters. ‘The popular | stories of China turn mostly upon) family affections. An English missionary, Mr. A. E. | Moule, has translated into English a bouk of Chinese moral tales used in | the schools of China. One story is this : There was a very naughty boy named Han, whom his mother used very! often to whip, but without making him ' shed a tear. flogged, he cried; whereupon But one day after being lia, The bishop made such progress that the sermon was delivered within the promised period in what was described as excellent Welsh. GOING BY THE EYE. Unless one has some other sort of knowledge to contradict it, it is natural to accept the eye. Therefore the answer which a teacher recently rece ye ed from her class of small was not altogether surprising. “Which is further away,” she asked, ‘England or the moon ?” “England!” the chiliren answered quickly. “England:” she questioned. “What makes you think that?” ‘“’Cause we can see the moon, and we can’t see England,” answered one _of the brightest of the class. A SPELLING LESSON—PROPER NAMES Aaron, Alexander, Algiers, Annapolis, Ann Arbor, Arizona, Arkansas, Austra- Boise City, Bologna, Brooklyn, his Bordeaux, Brussels, Caesar, California, mother asked him why he did so. Canandaigua, Cairo, Cayenne, Chau- “Oh, mother,” he answered, “you tauqua, Chesapeake, Cheyenne, Chica» used to hurt me when you flogged me, go, Cologne, Cicero, Cincinnati, Cleve= but now IL weep because you are not land, Colorado, Connecticut, Dakota, ! strong enough to hurt me.” There is a curious story of a boy of eight, named Woo Mang, which means Brave and Talkative. He was wonder- fully dutiful to his parents who were so poor they could not afford mesquito nettings for their bed. in the evening, used to get into his parents’ bed, and let the mosquitos bite him without disturbance for an hour or two, and then, when they! were filled with his blood, and could | bite no more, he would get out and) call to his parents to go and sleep in | peace. The work is filled with such tales as these. Family duty seems to be the religion of the Chinese people, and Chinese families live together in peace and harmony. Many of their popular sayings express a very elevated kind of moral feeling. For example; “Use men as you use wood. If an inch 1s rotten you must not reject the whele piece.” “Think of your own faults when you are awake and of the faults of others when you are asleep.” THANKS. Inspector McCormac wishes to thank the Faculty of ‘he Summer School of Science for electing him Vice-President of the School fur the ensuing year. Not having been present at the session of the schoul this year the distinction is all the more appreciatcd. THE WELSH DOUBLE L. A teacher who has just died in Wales distinguisbed himselt by helping a bishop to make good a boast that he would be able to preach a sermon in Welsh within three months of his con- secra‘ion. The pronunciation of the “Il” was a serious hindrance, and the teacher gave » counsel which proved effective : ‘Place the Op of your right rever- eid tongue upon the roof of your episcopal mouth, and hiss like a goose.” verY PACTHER For common ailrients which may | occur in every family.
