Aug. 23.-During one of the recent German air raids on the east coast a well known surg on was performing the operation ol' tracheo- tomy on a girl at a nursing home. it was night an the municipal electric service was at once suspended. All lights went out at the very moment when the surgeon was opening her windpipe. l"ortunately, says the Lancet, it was not the first attack delivered a- gainst this place. Taught by experi- ence, the operator had made it a mat- ter of habit to warn his nurses and other assistants that lamps should be kept ready for use during all opera- tions which had to be undertaken at night. This precaution saved the little patient's life. With but a trifling de- lay, the tracheotomy was completed and the girl is now doing well.
