A farmer, named Meloche, of Caughnawaga about seven miles from this city, was burned todeath last night in trying to save his cattle. His barn, stables and stock were all consumed, An attempt was made to wreck the train on the M. O. & O. Railway near Ottawa on Sa- turday evening by placing obstructions on the line. They were discov ered in time to prevent accident, An engine anc. seven cars were wrecked on the Grand Trunk between Richmond and Point Levia by some miscreants placing an ob- struction on the line. The train men miracu- lously escaped with only some bruises. A cablegram to Allan says the ‘‘ Sardinan” has been floated again. The Bank of Montreal's year ended 30th statement for the April last, has just been issued to-day. Semetschkin says that the Grand Duke Constantine has learned from the recent war that Russia needs a far larger naval force, and his Government will expend annual 7,500 roubles for its increase. No vessels have yet been purchased or chartered None will be chartered. No priva- teers will be fitted out here. His} ' Honor the Recorder, who has just return- ed from Ottawa, was in his place. The Bye-Laws relating to ‘* Sanitary arrange- ments and to nuisances,” were read. Some (liseussion arose respecting -the placing of merchandise upon the sidewalks in front of stores. A numerously signed petition has been sent into the Council, praying that the present Bye-law be amended. The Re- corder gave it, as his legal opinion, that the Bye-law could not be altered. Councillor Morris submitted an amendment to the sec- tion of the Bye-law relating to placing of merchandise upon the sidewalks. The amendment was lost. LauNCcHED, on Monday, the 13th inst., from the shipyard of James Keefe, Esq., Souris, a very handsome and well-modelled brig of 349 tons register, classed Al for 7 years at English Lloyds. It is asserted, by those who profess to know, that this is one of the strongest and best- finished ves- sels ever built in King’s County, while we may safely say that, for elegance of finish, she has never been surpassed on the Island. The cabs, which are very commodious, have been beautifully fitted up in oak, ma- hogany and walnut, and reflect much credit upon Mr. John McKay, of this City, under whose superintendence the work was done. She has also been fitted with one of Coffin’s ‘** Patent Union Screw Steerers,” which is a great improvement over any steering ap- paratus hitherto used ; while every care that skill could suggest has been given by Mr. Keefe throughout the building, in order to make her what she is—a first-class ves- sel. This fine craft, which has been called the ‘‘ Annabelle,” was built for and is owned by Hon. Daniel Davies, and will be commanded by Capt. A. F. Yates, late master of of the brigt. ‘‘ Harry Davies.” Married.
