A PLEASANT AFFAIR.-A very
pleasing function took place at the
residence of Mr K. J. Martin, Stipen-
diary of this city, Thursday evening,
when six Eldon boys, members of No.
2 Siege Battery, were presented with
a number of suitable gifts purchased
by the ladies of Eldon. The gifts
were selected by Mr Geo. M. Moore,
on thc advice of Mr Stephen McKin-
non, who recommended what he con-
sidered would be most useful in the
trenches. They consisted of handker-
chief, gloves, tobacco and pouch and
cigarette case Snr each. The presen-
tation was ma. e on behalf of the
ladies by Mr Martin to T. McTavish',
Harry McTavish, Angus Murchison,
Daniel Ross, W. Singleton and W. L.
Williamson. The recipients made a

has received a letter from his broth-
er, Alexaiider, of the 26th Batt., who
was recently wounded in Fraiice.
Alex., who is only seventeen years
old, is quite cheery over it. and IS glad
lie had “a crack at them" first. The
following are details:

Dear Brother:
l now sit down to answer your kind
and welcome letter which l received
the other day and was glad to hear
from you and that you are all well.
This leaves me feeling not too bad. I
am in the hospital with a bullet wound
in the left foot. I got it on the 30th of
Septeiuber and I was in_three hos-
pitals, this being only four days since
I got shot. It is in 1'. bad place in the
foot; it-is through the same place as
you wt your cut with the ax. It
will be a while before it will be well.
But I got a crack at tliein and that is
worth a good bit. I got' your letter
about an hour before `\ I got shot.
There were two killed and I got it in
the foot. That was all we lost in three
days and tiiat aint too bad. \Ve are so
near that wo talk to tlieni from our
trench and they talk back. Well. I am
in a hospital in France and I have got
Canadian nurses and a doctor, and
that is good. They are nice to ine and
kind. Well you said, that Mac Mc-
Donald got hurt, and he is in the
hospital. That is too had. I guess we
will not be home for this Christmas
but for Easter, if all goes as it has
been doing this last week. I guess I
will ring off for this time. Give my
love to-niotiier and all the others.
