SPORTS FRONT @ By JIM CULLEN An announcement. by CaSsius Clay, that George Chuvalo will be his next opponent has rocketed the Canadian heavy- weight champion into the limelight. The big burly Canadian battled his way to recognition leas than a year ago in a bout staged in Madison Square Garden with former world heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson. Chuvalo lost a decision to the former heavyweight champion, but many observers thought the decision should have been in his favor. The Canadian turned in a which kept the packed arena on the edge of their seats throughout the match. This observer would like to see a Chuvalo-Clay fight as we feel the Canadian champien has a vast supply of strength as well as a good stomach for the heavy going. We feel confident Mr. Clay would know he was jin a fight if he elects to eriter the ring with the stocky blockbuster from Toronto. Clay named Chuvalo as his next opponent in an interview in London and stated, he thought the battle would be arranged in about three months. Gassius Cassius added that he would battle with former champ Floyd Patterson following the bout with Chuvalo The Canadian battler has confirmed offer from Ernie Ter- _rell, World Boxing Association’s version of the world champion, for-a title fight and if the Clay fight falls through Chuvalo will likely tangle with the rangy pugilist from Chicago. Terrel has agreed to fight Chuvalo in Toronto in late September or early. ‘October for a flat rate of $60,000. We. think a Chuvalo-Clay battle could prove good for the hadly wounded boxing game and we will be looking forward to the burly Torontonian getting a crack at Clay. Tid Bits From Here And There Round two of the bout over. the creation of a federal boxi commission, with poWer to bar broadcast of fights, will be fough fm the U.S. Senate. Chairman Oren Harris, the -bill’s sponsor, said broadcasting industry spokesman had wired congressman expressing concern that a precedent would be set by granting the commission authority to ban in advance a broadcast, probab- ly violating freedom of speech. Wilt Chamberlain doesn’t want to fight. He had been offered a bexing contract by Gus D'Amato, former manager of ex- heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson. D'Amato had said Wilt Chamberlain gets about $50,000 from the 76ers pro basketball team Red Carpet owned by Adrian and Gerard Miron of St. Au- gustine, Que., was made the 7-5 favorite recently for Thursday's $100,000 Empire Pace at Yonkers Raceway.
