Maprip, April 18. At 10.30 this morning, while the Bishop of Madrid was ascending the steps of the cathedral he was shot with a revolver by a priest. After firing three shots, the priest was seized, thas putting a stop to his mur derous work. His victim was care ried to the private chamber in the cathedral, where the last sacrament tor the dying were administered to him. The motive for the crime was revenge, as the man who fired the shots was recently dis- missed from the priesthood, and had fruit- lessly applied to the Bishop to be rein- stated. Scheme Denounced. Dusun, April 18. At a meeting of tenant farmers at Kildysart to-day, the land purchase bill was denounced as simply a measure for the relief of landlords. It was declared that if the farmers got their holdings on the basis of four years’ rental their position would be very little improved, as they are without the neces- sary capital with which to obtain a start. A resolution was adopted, asking the Parnellite members of Parliament to op- pose the Bill. Gladstone's A Ruthless Canard. Toronto, April 18. Great excitement was created here yes- terday morning, by the News publishing five columns of a despatch from Ottawa, purporting to be the farewell address of Sir John A, Macdonald, announcing his re- tirement into private life.
