Brother Jonathan began to talk rather loudly about sending his fleet to Constantinople ala John Bull; but the Sultan stopped Wee unspeak ible that little game bv a remark which, being translated into plain Englis! meant thathe would blow the ships owt of water if he tried any such game. So the squadron remained where it was. But Jonathan is equal to the emergency, nod the Standard Oil Company have decided to try, 80 it is said, what alittle judi: ous bribery will do, aud deavor to buy the Sultan over to their side and then have the privileges grant Russians eoncelled. If we did not dispiseea pun, we should say that having failed with their navy they will try what their knavery can accomplis! The oi! question being settled, the other matter, which involves simply a ques tion of life and death, may be vory properly allowed to stand. Rum’s Work. The Nova Scotia barque, Myrtle,Capt. J. Darter bound for Pernambuco, left New York on the 16th inst.,and artehor- ed off Whitestone, D. J]. While there, the mate, Michael Walsh, engaged in afght with James Williams, sailor, who attacked him with a knife. Walsh picked up an axe and struck Williams iu the back of the neck, break- ing bis spinal column and knocking him deed upon the deck. Walsh was in toxicated ut the time, and been worked will en- ed to the sevend up to a state of trenzied rage by the) fight, attacked. other sailors, who took to the rigging for safety. He then turned to the dead body of Williams, which he beat to jelly, aed then return ed to the cabin with a bottle of whiskey | belonging to the murdered map, which he had appropriated. The Captain was not on board at the time, and the first mate had great difficulty in preventing the crew, who were mostly Norwegians, from lynching the murderer, and word was finally sent ashore, and a deputy sheriff and a constable came on board and arrested Walsh. aE + A +S Peculiar Advertising. Boston merchants are rivalling one another in rather questionable advertis- ing devices, A clothier removed all the goods from his show window, and put in their piace a big live monkey. For days the sidewalk was blocked with specta- tors, aad policemen had te be detailed to preserve order. ‘The free menagerie became such a nuisanee that the Mayor, decided it to be in the nature of a show, suppressed it as a place of unlicensed amusement. Another Clothier turned his window, which were very spacious, into a wax works exhibition surpassing in honor the objects in the crypt of the Eden Musee. This drew immense mul- titudes, and.as some of the exhibits were decidedly objectionable, the proprietor achieved his object in being talked about by the whole town. A third man at- tracted attention more pleasantly. He converted the plate glass of hia store frontiatoimmense mirrors in which gazers simply saw themselves more or less satisfactorily. —_—_— A > ge The Colwell Moter Co. A meeting was held in Lowell Mass. on the 12th inst., of the stockholders in the Colwell triple thermic motor com- pany, a local organization owning a paient which its inventor claims is vast- ly superior to ordinary steam for mo- tive power. Direet information was re- fused the press, because it has ridculed the promises made by the company. It is learned, aj the same, that Rev. Dr. T. M. Colwell, pastor of the first Bap- tist Church there, who is at the head of the concern, made a statement of his doings, which was fully endorsed | by his associates. Chicago capital has been so far increased as to assure the erection of a manufactory, probably in that city, for manufacturing the Col- well machines.. For more than a year nothing has been done except to sell stock. If the managers are really pro- ceeding to practical work, they will remove the insinuations of fraud which have long been current. ES AE The Cattle Trade. For the past week the demand for cattle im Montreal has been brisk, an: exporters wsded in freely, despite the untavorabie tenor of cable 1eports,which called the British markets dul! and de- cliniog. Actual sales of shipping eattle were made ot 6c. and 6c. per lb. live weight, and it was whispered about that even as high as 6ge. had been paid for something extra choice. This how- ever, Must not be taken a3 exceptional. Freights are unsettled, and many rates are given, theiainge boiog from £3 and £4 per. bead. Insurance contracts against mortality have been made at 2 and 2} per cent. Private cables re- ceived, indicate no improvement in the markets. Te those at a distance the earthquake in England, seems to have been but a trifling affair, that toppled over a few rickety chimneys, upset a spire or two that were probably out of perpendicular, while very many persons in _ the centre of the disturbed district were apparently hardly aware that anything 1} nary had happened. Yet the much truth, undoubtediy, iu the obser- vation of the Pngincer that “it needed but slightly greater velocity of wave particle net only to have laid low the ‘towns in the eastern ccunties, but to ‘have made mountainous heaps of brick- bats and rubbish of Londoo.” Billiard Match. extraoral- is very The game of billiardsor the cham- pionsbip of the world and $500 a side, was played in Chicago on the 12th inst, between Jacob Schaetfer and Slosson, was a one-sided affair, Schaeffer quickly secured the commanding lead, which he steadily increased.
