MeCarthy, in *“Reminis- this story of Henry Justin his cences,” tells Ward Beecher: is “Il met Beecher during my first visit to America, and I heard him preach 19 the temple of his ministrations, the Piymouth church, in Brooklyn. Beech- er’s style as a preacher was more like that of the pulpit orators who flourish- ed a century or two aso than like the style of our own more refined or more conventional days. He never thought it beneath himself or his calling to say an amusing thing in one of his sermons if the thought came up appropriately Iie had a way when he OL in his mind. entered his’ church on the Sunday up any letters which miight be there, and he some- taking addressed to him times opened one of these and read !t out to the congregation and made it 2 text on which to hang a discourse. a @) day he op ned such a letter, and he found that it contained the nele word ‘Fool.’ He mentioned the fact to his congregation and then quietly added, ‘Now I have known many an instance of a man writing 4 letter and forgetting to sign his name, but this is the only instance I have ever known of a man signing his name and forgetting to write the letter.’’ Easily Recognized. Charles Dickens delighted to tell sto- ries of John Forster, the writer and editor with whom he was much associ- ated. Mr. Forster had so peremptory and so decisive a manner that it im- pressed all who came in contact with him. His servants were kept in per- fect and almost abject submission to his wishes, and yet he showed many kindnesses to them, and they were greatly attached to him. The story runs that on one occasion a cabman called at the printing office and was unable to give the name of the person who had ordered him to come at a certain hour, without fail. The office porter asked for a descrip- tion of his fare, and the cabman stated that he was “a stout gentleman.” To this the porter replied that there were several stout gentlemen in the office and inquired whether this one was tall or short. “I don’t know which you'd call him,” returned the cabman. “I don't take special notice; but there can't be two like him; he’s that there harbitrary cove!” The porter summoned Mr. Forster without hesitation and found he had made no mistake. When the story leaked out, nobody enjoyed it more than the “harbitrary cove” himself, Same Thing. Cholly—Love me, love my dog, you know.
