S., after a brief illness of heart failure, there peacefully passed away in the per- uon of Capt. Thomas W. Reynolds, one of the most widely known and. highly respected master mariners that Prince' Edward Island has ever had the honor to produce. He was born in Gaspereaux, King's County, in 1840, and ,at an early. age took up the sea as a. profession, serving in vessels owned by the late Hon's Jo- seph Wightmlan and Daniel Gordon, ' chief mate. In 1861, he bade farewell to his Island home and started in the em- ploy of the S. J. Bogait Co., of Granville.F‘erry, N. S., then one of the largest shipowning and ship- building comrpanies in the Maritime Provinces, and by strict attention to his duties soon ascended ‘from the. position of second mate to the com- ‘mand of the barque "Grace," at that ltime the finest ship in the Bogait fleet, afterwards commanding the ships "S. J. Bogalt" and “James Stafford," sailing to many of th* principal seaports' of the world. In the "James.Staiford" it -may be said that Captain Reynolds made n. record passage from 'Yokohama to San Francisco, keeping company with the steamship "City of Pekin," one of the fastest and most luxurious of the Trans-Pacific passenger shi s.
