From all parts of the city came Repub-
lican parades,couverging upon the Square,

Broadway cable cars were almost at ri
standstill: cabrivers gazed with despair
on the throngfand then turned their
horses’ heads around: and pedestrians
who wanted to go uptown had to make a
circuit by Fourth or Sixth Avenue. On
the Square were twenty-five booths from
which iron-lunged spclhinders' told forth
in stertorous voice the disabilities of
Bryanism. From the heaven-storming
tower cf Madison Square Garden, itself
studded with electric globes, bclched
forth myriad coruscations of fire in every
fairy device known to the inimitable

bombs vomited heavenward with deep-
resounding boom, scattering comet-tailed

ground of the night, while rockets whizzed
