Tue progress of Montreal last year is shown very conclusively by the following Customs returns:—The duties received for the fiscal year ending 30th ult. were $7 .077,793, an increrse of $1,844,991 over 1880, $3,000,000 over 1879, and exceeding the most prosperous year Canada had ever previously known, that of 18745, by $1,200,000. The receipts for last June were $710,928, an increase of 25 per cent. over the corresponding month of 1889. On ar- riving at Denneliy’s wharf, where a number of men were engaged in unloading one of the steamships, the strikers called upon them to stop and followed up with threats of violence if they did not by fring revol- The men quietly desisted and then left the grounds, The procession then re- formed and proceeded to the Dominion Line, where they attempted to drive off the gang of inen engaged on the vessels, but were met by a foree of police and the capiam, vers | answer he got was a volley of shots from A collection | who directed the mob to disperse, The revolvers, which, however, had no injurieus effect upon the policemen. A magistrate who was present read the Riot Act, after Whieh the police fired upon the rioters, wounding three or four, but not danger- ously, so far as can be ascertained. The police next made a charge on the disturb- shots being fired by the retreating strikers. The officers afterwards arrested some of the party and locked them up. Sergt. Reeves was with his men when the city police made the charge up the hill, and notic- ing one man in the act of firing a stone, ho rushed into the crewd of strikers and seized him. The sergeant was followed by Morrison and Gravel, two policemen, and upon these the strikers turned, attacking them to rescue their prisoners. Just then there was a rush up the hill by the police, armed with their rifles, and the strikers gave away before the determined crewd, the butt ends of their rifles being laid about their shoulders and ribs as they ran across Jacques Cartier Square.
