LONDON, Sept LG in political circles in Constantinople tix i general expression of opinion is that Eng- land is worthy of the confidence of the war deserves the highest praise. The peo-' ple are advised to act in accordance with | England and to do their utmost to frustrate the designs of Russian intrigues in the contrary clirectlon. Fort Ghemileh has surrendered to the British, but the garrison at Damietta still continues rebellious, notwithstanding the death of its leader, Abdellah Pacha. The garrison has now refused to surrender. It is believed that the officers there have been | in communication with the Sultan, and are confident that trvuopsfrom Turkey will soon arrive and take the part of the National | party intercepted letters tend to strengthen this idea, aud it is said that the English Government have now in their possession documents showing collusion between Arabi, the Commandant of Dami ettaand the Sultan, Notwithstanding the threat of Sir Garnet Wolseley regarding the rioting in Cairo, the town is still in an excited state and the leading spirits of the rebellious proceed- ings are spreading abroad some most ab- | surd reports, tending to rouse the people | and causing much anxiety. The latest report ‘spread abroad by the fanatcis is that Rassia is forwarding an army of more than fifty thousand men to fight the cause of the national party on Egyptian svil, and to drive the English from their positions in Egypt. ’ Lord Dufferin has been instructed to in- form Said Pacha that the English Ministry see no necessity to continue negotiations on the military convention. The Porte denies that Sheikh Obeidal- Ish has tendered his resignation to the Sultan The Hnasar regiment has occupied Dam- anhour. Arabi, the Egyptian rebel, and Mabh- mond Fehmy,Arabi’s chief military adviser, are confined together in prison at Alexan- dria. Arabi is sick, suffering from a severe fever. Gladstone has advised the King of Greece to refrain from pushing the frontier claims to extremity. (The difficulty between the Turks and the Greeks at Karilik Dervend has the fol- lowing origin: The pass of Karilik Der- vend ig the only one between Thessaly and Macedonia, which was given to Greece in the regulation of the frontiers —reason the more, according to the Turkish view, wad not giving it up. . The southern entrance to the pass has, therefore, been kept by the | Turks in spite of the Convention. Two months ago General Grivas, an able soldier | for mountain operations, was sent by the Greek Government to occupy unostentati- ously a point in the pass some distance north of the Turkish position, called Sosba This he did successfully, cutting off the communication of the Turkish post with Macedonia. Sosba is within the line as- signed as the Greek frontier, and its pos-| session by the Greeks, therefore, of indis- putable right, and the attempt of the Turks | to drive out Grivas as equally undispatably an unprovoked attack. According to the accounts from Greece, the Turkish attacks have been thus far repelled. | Floods jin the Tyrol. CANADIAN NEWS. ——_—————— > . MORE WRECKS. Special Despatch to the Examiner.
