Straight ahead — BRIAN AUGERS OBLIVION EXPRESS l This week we set a minor record for acid indigestion, after our various visits to the snack places of Ch- arlottetown. In the course of our travels, we found banana splits without ban— anas, hamburgers apparently with no hamburger, and an establishment which turned away free advertisement. Slightly bloated after our consumption of gallons of Eno and cartons of Tums and Rolaids, we sat down to write this article. As you may have guessed by now, our mission to the take— out places of Charlotte- town was on some occasions a disaster. However, we did find a few havens in this wilderness of taste— \' less slops. Speaking of tasteless slops, we first ventured forth to the A-& W. As we brushed the-flies away, We tore our gaze from the gumfchewing jaws of the girl preparing the hambur— gers, and, shuddering, Placed our order. During our twelve—minute wait, what little anticipation we had felt slowly drained away as we scrutinized the interesting patterns of the dirt on the walls and floor.‘Finally our Teen- buPeers‘arrived, along with é Hug of the deservedly ,15. 20. We con- cluded that, whoever's root the beer was run from, app— arently didn't have too much to run, since the glass was only half full of root beer, the rest being foam. we must say that the teenburgers were good. Still, reviewing our overall impressions, we felt the A & W as a take , out place should be given the Russian solution: it should be taken out tor Siberia and left there.' Next we decided to try the A & W's counterpart, _MacDonald's. The differ— ence was unbelievable. Instead of filthy floors, we found floors that were -scrubbed twice in the shOrt, time we were there. Dur- ing Our tour of the fac- ilities, it was impossible not to notice the smiling faces of the staff, as con- trasted with the funeral— parlor atmosphere at A &‘W. The kitchens and working area were spotlessly clean and litter free, in spite of the fact that they had just completed their rush hour. Due to the recent” government recomendation that hamburger be cooked above 160 degrees, we in— quired about the cooking ' 22. clarion-town- « . We were told that‘ all burgers were cooked at a minimum of 350 degrees. noting their efficiency, then went out front and placed our order, which I was for a Big Mac, a Quar— ter Founder, french fries, milkshakes, and an apple We were served in thirty two seconds, as compared to our pre— viously mentioned twelve' minute wait at the A‘& W. We then took our orders to the attractive eating area. While eating, we not- ed the landscaping, done in a distinctive manner with Island stone. The french fries we fou— nd to be excellent, the milkshakes good, and the hamburgers below the level of those at the A‘& W. The apple turnovers were doughy and tasteless. In summary, for those who want cleanliness, eff- iciency, unusually low prices, and adequate food, we recommend MacDonald's, while for those who want adequat burgers, ineffic- ently prepared and served, at high prices in unsanit- ary surroundings, we sugg- est the A & W. ~ Col. Sanders was our next stop in what came to be a series of culinary cat— astropy. The establishment was clean and the staff courteous but twenty and thirty minute waits for‘ "a take out store is ridic-I ulous. The snackpacks were not filling enough for half a meal and the prices are too high; The only reasonable deal was the chicken dinner which at 1.85 is still quite enough. In sum we .did not see anything to justify it as a good place to go to eat. We now turn to a brief discussion of the pizza places in Charlottetown. We found as a whole, that the price for a pizza was higher than the amount and often quality of the' _food would justify. The three places reviewed were Happy Shack, Pizza Delight and Pizz House. We found Happy Shack to be dirty, the pizzas grea- sy and burnt and the prices high. The only favorable thing to be said for it is that it serves excellent homemade bread ‘ Pizza Delight was also dirty, the pizzas greasy, and the prices high. Fur— thermore the staff had an unfortunate tendency to suck their fingers after removing pizzas from the oven. - We now come to the third and last, Pizza House, the best of the three, more accurately if less grammat~ ically correct, thefleast worst. Pizza House is far cleaner than thefiother two, the staff friendlier and the pizzas good. However, when one con— siders that enough pizza for two might cost up to seven dollars, a burger meal for two at MacDonald's would only come to about $2.50 for two. 30 if you get a craving for pizza, we would recommend making your own, or if you do not have the time or facilities, we suggest Pizza House is ’ the best choice.
