Over one thousand children attended at Market Hall last night to practice the singing ef some pieces in honor of the Marquis of Lorne and his royal wife. The practice was conducted by Mr. John Ross. A correspond- ent says: ‘This is laudable. But he has one suggestion to offeron the} subject: ‘‘ Hurrah for Canada” is on the programme; and, if it be sung, he wishes the enuncistion would be # little attended to, and instead of the harsh ‘*In-gel-and” we have heard so repeatedly, let us hear the more euphonious and suffi- ciently musical sound, “‘ England.” Our cor- reapondet does not desire to offend but to improven Jur re-organization ef the North-West mounted police is talked of. The control of it is to be transferred from the Department of State to that of theInterier. It will probably be enlarged. By a law enacted at the last session of Parliament, the transfer was pro- vided for, as well as the enlargement to the extent of five hundred men. It is to be hoped, however, that {no such increase will be uired. Bot the re-organization will, no doubt, be effected. Col. Sir,—For the information of persons en- gaged in the lobster canning business, I desire you to publish the following telegram received by me from the Department of Marine and Fisheries, Ottawa, in reply to a telegraphic message of inquiry sent by me to the Depart- ment :- *Orrawa, Lith Aug. 1879. To D. Davtrs: ** Minister decided not to extend lobster season. Regulations will be strictly en- forced. ‘WW. FP. Wurircuer.” Apart from the question as to whether the close season, as at present ordered by the De- partment, is or is not the proper season for the preservation of this valuable branch of our fisheries; and which, I am well aware, is ques- tioned by those engaged in the business, I would suggest to them that it is their interest to close the factories on the 20th August, be- zause the supply of canned lobsters is already in excess of the demand, and priees have gone down in consequence to little over the cost of production, and any further increase of the a canned, will, most certainly, tend to ecrease the price of those already canned, so that all that are caught after the 20th of August will go for nothing. Better leave them in the sea for next year. I venture to predict they will be scarce enough in }0 years hence. Your obd’t Servant, Perkins & Sterns.
