Holding my breath I tried to peep out. Straining my eyes I fancied I could distinguish the figure of a woman gliding very slowly along and I was asking myself whether my imag- ination had not carried me away when I heard the handle of the door which led into the house softly turned. The door was locked however, and I heard the handle rattled impatiently. Almost at the same time I heard Higgins’ voice within the house humming a comic song. At this sound the intruder fled back along the storeroom—scarcely in time. As the watchman opened the door, he caught sight of the intruder, whom he took for me. ‘*Hello! There you? Well, you time.’’ He blew his whistle three times. In 4 moment a young man carrying a lantern appeared at the end of the store- room, ‘*Hello!”’ he said, ‘‘what’s up?’’ ‘There's a gal of the ’ouse a wander- in’ about this place,’’ said Higzins, in a half-excited tone. ‘I'm afraid she'll get me tnto trouble, fall down the lift, p'raps, or something.’’ “I see. He went an:— ‘‘So that when she asked for the man- ager, I guessed she might be meaning you, and I let her go up.”’ ‘‘Let her go hup?’’ repeated Higgins, ‘‘why, who do you mean?”’ “A tall lady in a gray silk drese and black bonnet, who come through the yard ten minutes ago, and asked to see the manager, as I tell you.”* **Well, of all the bloomin’ rum things as ever ‘appened,’’ said Higgins. ‘Then there are two women a-playin’ hide end seek about this ‘ere place, as sure’s my name's Higgins.’’ ‘Rivals, eh, a-bustin’ other's ’alr out all on young spark?’’ Hiiggins seemed not displeased at this suggestion, though he affected to reject 5, and proposed to continue the search. are get ma'am, are away this you don't it on herself, to tear each account of one ‘ a5, No go, old boy; a girl keeps out of the way of a chap like you, cos she knows you'll run after her,”’ said his companion. ‘Now, if i¢ was me, she would never let me alove, That's Gitlerence. After this there was a long period of dead stlence, and I felt at last that I might come out of my hiding place, and move abouta little, when suddenly I thought I could hear sounds of voices in the distance. They came nearer. I dis- tinctly heard, ‘‘All right, sir,’ in Hig- gins’ voice, and then the door at the end uf the storeroom opened quietly, and I heard a man’s tread along the creaking boards. When nothing but one empty packing case stood between him and myself I stopped and waited. 1 heard him raise the lid of the venti- lator, and then 1 heard Alice sigh as she turned in bed. The man fiad calculated his time to a minute. The wire work of the ventilator was lifted, and the birds let through, with the fluttering and screeching I had heard twice before. After a short interval the birds were withdrawn and the ventilator closed. I was beginning to think I shonid have no opportunity of seeing the mau s face, when suddenly I heard some one coming in with a light, In a few moments I saw, to my astonishment, that {!t was the woman who had followed Egbert from Mr. Jones’ office in London. The expression of her face was wild and fierce. That one glimpse of her was enough for me. I crouched down behind the packing case and waited for the (To be Continued.) REBUKED BY THE CZAR. Mle Took the Part ofa Persecuted Officer. A pleasing story is told about the young czar. He has long been anxious tocheck the spirit of luxury and ex- travagance that permeates the upper grades of the Russian army, and cir- cumstances have just enabled him to administer a well-merited rebuke. A young officer in a smart regiment, not being very rich, took a tram one day in St. Petersburg, an act which was con- sidered by his comrades to be infra dig., so they one and all “cut” the offender, causing him to receive intimations that his resignation was desired. How- ever, the matter reached the czar's ears, whereupon he went out, tooka place in one of the despised public con- veyances, arrived at the barracks un- attended and propounded this poser to the amazed olticers: ‘‘Now gentlemen, I hear that to ride in a tram is consid- ered beneath the dignity of an officer in your regiment. I have just been riding in a tram, and Iam your colonel. Do you wish me to send in my papers?” Of course, everybody apologized, and now the lieutenant does as he pleases. TRAVELS OF THE PEN. Clerks Write a Distance of Half a Milea Day. Has it ever struck you what a dis- tance your pen travels every time you write a letter, or even when you sign your name? If not, here are some fizures that will astonish you. Each word you write isabout an inch long; some words, of course, are very much less, but the average of all your words is as nearly as possible an inch in length. ‘Taking into consideration, however, the numerous curves made in forming each letter, your pen travels the space of about three inches in every word. Now, if you are a fairly rapid writer, you will write thirty words per min- ute. That i say, every minute your pen ti a distance of seven and one-half feet, or one hundred and fifty ; + is vO aveis yards in the hour. Clerks, or those who wield the pen at all vigorously write at least half a mile a day, or about one hundred and twenty miles in the working year. Nelson's Flagship. Probably one of the greatest attrac- tions at Cowes this year was Nelson’s flagship, the Foudroyant, which not having created sufficient interest dur- ing her stay in the Thames, was taken to the Isle of Wight for afew weeks. When, four years ago the Foudroyant was towed to England, after being res- cued from a German ship-broker, it was not expected that she would ever again face the open sea, outwardly, at least, in the same condition as when Nelson was on board. Amongst the yachts at Cowes, essentially light and elegant, the rnde and ponderous naval architecture exemplified in the Foud- royant showed even greater contrast than amidst the dull surroundings of the Thames. The Foudroyant is now about the oldest ship in existence, and as she was when built the last of an old type, she is more old-fashioned than many other ships of her period. Al- though she was in her day considered one of the finest ships afloat. the rough- ness and discomfort of the ship may be in some degree gathered from the fact that itis impossible to stand upright any where below, excepting in the gun- room. Nodoubt the opportunity which will be offered by the presence of the Foudroyant at Cowes of seeing what old warships really were will be appre- ciated, as this is probably the last time that one will be seen in British waters in almost its original condition. The life of a ship at the age of the Foudroy- ant must always be precarious, and probably in a few years she will have sailed her final voyage. As almost al! the companies are foreign, it was natural for them to refuse; and they threatened, iu case the order was persisted in, to stop all the trains.
