The bald: official report at first received merely stated our losses, which were oFficially known by the Admiralty, giving also! fragmentary re- ports of eyewitnesses of the enemy’s known and pro- bable losses. Nothing was said of the relative sizes or of the number of ships engaged. lt now transpires ‘that the British squadron was a detached squadron of battle cruisers, cruisers and torpedo boat destroyers. There was not a dreadnought or .1 battleship among thetn. The German fleet, on the other hand was their iu'ain North Sea fleet and consisted of dreaduoughts and heavy battleships as \vell as smaller craft. In the first encounter our ships were at a serious disadvantage and their losses were heavy, but that they put up a noble and gallant fight is indicated by the fact that among the enemy ships destroyed was Germany’s new- est and heaviest dreadnought as \vell as a greater num- ber of craft of all sizes than we lost. There is considerable criticism in the British press over the fact that a squadron of the size of that en- gaged in this case should have been in a position to be overtaken by a tierman fleet. This criticism, some of which has appeared in the Guardian, may or may not be just. lt is perhaps a case of “being wise after the event." lt will be remembered that after some of the raids on the coast cities of li.ngland and Scotland the .'\ _ _ g _ support on the part of the Christian people of the pro-_O cf’ 1 '\" "-5, lntefnational Ha|‘vest¢r C0, 0°* *tip ' s'r..n'»im,N.B. _ - "wr 158-6-3EsmMtutt.
