In its issue of July 22 the London Spectator refers to Laurie’s scbeme of Senate reform, and eaye: “Such questions must cf course be decided by the will of the Canadian people, but we can- not help hoping that, on consideration» Canada will abandon this scheme for settling disputes between the two Houses, aad adopt that which has found favor in Australia, under which a poll of the people is taken to settle a conflict between the Upper and Lower Houses. In a dispute between servants the appeal should be to the mas- ter,—i e., to the whole body of the electors. We are quite aware that regular party politicians always dislike this plan ; but that is a recommendation rather than the reverse.” In this the Spectator pute admirably the principle of the metter; and evervone must see that Sir Wilfrid was well advised by the Liberal caucus when his proposal to overcome the vote of the Senate was laughed at and metaphorical- ly kicked out of the House of Commons by the Liberal cancus. The nonsensical idea will not be revived. THE OPPOSITION AND HILLSBOROUGH BRIDGE. Tue Guardian now says that it is “not at all sorry for anything that it expressed or implied” in regard to the Opposition’s position on the Hillsborough Bridge ques- tion. Well, it ought to be sorry ; for the article, unintentioually or ctherwise, con- veyed to iis readers an entirely false im- pression. The Guardian now asks “what would the present prospect of the construction of bridge and railway be worth if the Opposi tion had succeeded in defeating the Gov plan ?” As tie Opposition could not and did not defeat the Govern- ment’s plan, the question need not be con sidered. The Opposition performed it, constitutional duty of criticising the Gov - ernmeat’s ernment’s plan; and the Government’s plan was carried asa matter of course. The Liberals of Quebec have ap parently borrowed one of the“ ideas” from their fellow office holders in this Province. —Itis pointed out by Mr. Davin that whatever Mr. Sifton may be himeelf, he certainly has an extraordinary collecticn of friends. One of his cronies is W. T. R. Preston of ‘Hug the Machine” fame. To Preston he is so much attached that he says nothing can deprive the campaign- er of his $3,000 jb, with expenses thrown in. Preston’- j»b which was given to him just after the West Elgin affair, is « tour through Europe at the public expense with aninterpreter avd a valet. Preston was evidently weary after his campaign in Weet Huron, South Ontario, and else-~ where foc Mr. Hardy; and the Federal Government turned in to give him a heli- day at the expense of the people, The case reminds Mr. Davin of the verse which tells us that “Mrs. Gillis very ill, Nothing can improve her, Unless she sees the Tuileries, And waddles through the Louvre.” ee OUR SEWERAGE ! Dean Siz,— Considerable Ciscussion bas taken place from time to time by some of our citizeps who feel they have at least a Jittle interest in affairs generally, and par- ticvlarly regarding the rumber of man- holes in our sewerage system. It was . laimed that“ flushing” could mure readiy be done, and also more frequently. Would yor, Mr Editor, ascertain for one, or rather maoy interested persons, when the “‘flush- ing” performance will commence ? surely some of the sluggish grades (of which we unfortunately bave a number) muet re- quire attention long ere this.
