Association is pleased to announce that the special guest and preach- er at the services next week in observance oi The Universal Week oi Prayer will be The Reverend Prank Lawson, B.A., 3.1).. Minister oi The Presbyterian Church oi ssint David, in l-ialliax. Mr. Lawson is a. native oi Northnn Ireland who, on coming to Canada, took his Arts Course at the University oi Western Ontario In London, and his Divinity Course at Union Theo. logical Seminary in New York. Alter serving as interim supply at st. Andrew's Church, Kitchener, Ontario, he was called in 1945 to S. David's Church, Haiiiax, where he has had a euocesslul pastorate and has won for himself a high reputa- tion as a preacher. In iact. Mr. law- son is in such wide demand as a preacher that on two different occasions previously the Charlotte- town Ministerial Association invited him to come ior the Week oi Pray- Halilex Preacher y Thoughts For Our Time 1 By His Eminence Cardinal Mciiuigun (Copyright) ; I8 REFLECTION 0 "rho spirit of Christmas" is a phrase which can mean very much or very little. It should mean some- thing. because at Christmaeiime we do not merely commemorate an historical event. but we also think of that event as a symbol oi truths which aiiect us here and now. These truths are expressed in various ways, such as "good will among men," and most oi these expressions seem to be iittlng as tar as they go; they only become repugnant when they are taken to be the whole meaning of Christ- mas. when they are taken as the whole meaning of Christmas, they do not explain Christmas to us, they explain it away. The birth of Christ does have a very real meaning for us here and now. because here and now He is being born in our hearts. He told us that we are to love one another as He has loved us and that. ii we did so. He would come and dwell in our hearts. As the charity of our hearts measures up to that oi Christ, Christ is fashioned in our hearts, so that ultimately it is possible to say with St. Paul, "I live now, not I, but Christ iivw in me." To the extent that Christ in our hearts, we possess peace that the world cannot give. and we have cause or rejoicing. When Our Lord was asked during His lifetime why His disciples lives His I I LOVE FOR GOD I Since it takes two to make a quarrel, ii Christ is born wrthinl us. we not only have Joy and pedce within ourselves but we can also be It peace with one another. I so it is true to say that the spirit. of Christmas is peace among men, but 1!. is this, not merely as indicating an ideal, but also as showing us how to real- iu that ;deal. However, the story oi the birth of Christ is not merely a. symbol oi truths which affect us here and now. As an historical fact it is both a maniiestetion of God's love for men. and the beginning oi e liie which made it possible for us to love one another as we ought, and so to love God as He wants us to love Him. GET OUTSIDE SI-JLVES Moreover, it is better for Us to consider Christmas as an histcri. cal event than to be always con- cerned with what it means for us iThe Fuardlan 8 Frldily, December 31:54 us: e and now. The love oi our ueai vi wu. not grow it we are am aye ICIICISVIIIK upon it. it we iare to be born aga.n we must die to ourselves; we mus. get outside ourselves simply and directly ior their own sakes. We become better when we love in this way but it we be- come preoccupied with this bene- ill. to ourselves, we spoil our act. or love. and beneiit no one. God alone is entirely benevolent in loving others, since He is Al- Periect and acquires no new per- fection in coniei-ring beneliie upon us; thus He can be iully aware or what He is doing when He shows mercy to us, without being seiiish in the sense that we are seiiish when we are too sell-conscious and set out to love others lor the sake oi the good that love is going to do us. so, even though the birth or Christ implies so much (or us in symbolizing the birth oi Christ in our hearts, Christ. is actually born in our hearts when we iorget about ourselves, become absorbed in the Christmas story, let our- selves go when we feel like sing- ing the praise of God. and put ourselves out for those who need our help.
