The year 1899 was a period of prosperity more especially forthe men at the head of great enterprises. Multi-millionaires added to their millions as they had not done for a long time, but it is a pleasure to record that they did not keep, all the money themselves. There has never been a year, in the United States at leu.st,when so large an amount of money was given in public gifts. Universities, colleges, hos~' pitals, art galleries, libraries have been enriched. The total _amount given for these purp5ses in the twelve months is put down at $62,750,000, compared with $38,000,000 in 1898 and $45,000,001 in 1897. To this enormous sum gof money Mr. Carnegie contributed $5,000,000 most of which went to the libraries, audi besides he gave half a. million dollars to institu- tions outside the United States. Mr. Carnegie was generous in his gifts, but he is not impoverished forthe amount given hardly represents his increase profits in the year. Another resident of Pennsyl- vania, Mr. Widener, of Philadelphia, gave $2,000,000 for a. home and hospital for crippled children, and also thirty-six acres of land for a site for the institution. Mr. Rockfeller, of Standard Oil fame, gave away three-quarters of a million dollars, as well as guaranteeing to duplicate _ all gifts up to $2,000,000 to Chicago University The university has succeeded in raising two million, and ,Mn Rockfeller will have to put up Y two million more. Cornelius Vanderbilt contributed over a million dollars. 'Edward Austin, of Boston, $1,100,000, and other rich men large sums. The greatest bene- factor of all, however, is a woman-Mrs. Leland Stanford, whose gift of property having a cash value of $15,000,000_t0 Stan- ford University, has previously been men- tioned in the papers, and make a. record that will not be often equalled. ~ " WHAT IS NEEDED ` By every man and woman if, they desire to secure comfort in this world isa corn shel- atmntivg A V _ - ler.Putnam’s Corn Extractfrrshells cox-ns in i ` with t-he best of order which prevailed ' two or three days and without discomfort or pain. .A hundred imitations the lme1itofPutnain's]?ainlessCorn _ ctor, which is always sure, safe,-and painless.
