Gunn, super- intendent oi-the Dominion Experi- mental Fur Farm and Supervisor of the Dominion Mink Illustration Stations. comprise the recom- mended procedure or these experi- mental iur ranches and are sub- mi” -to Canadian mink ranch- ers ior their assistance and study. b ” ,, stock in a mink ranch is one oi the most important phases oi mink ranch- ing procedure. The choice of breeding stock is based on several isctors, such as: iecundlty. iur characters. age, slm. breeding quality and other traits. A deiiniie system ior carrying out the procedure is desirable so that each phase oi selection is made in respect to the relative importance or the iactor under consideration. ' It is usually advisable to select ily ior iecundity or large litter site, because this trait is in- herited, and ii a rancher does not obtain good production he will soon go out of business. Next in importance h iur quality, which comprises proper length oi iur, toxture. density and colour or the iur. The relative length oi guard iur in relation to undcriur is de- slgnated in the trade as the nap oi the fur. Medium nap is in de- mand by iur manuiacturers and represents a guard iur oi approxi- mately three-quarters oi an inch rlong and underiur oi hali an inch in length. It is very important when ex- amining colour oi mink pelts that the colour oi the underiur should blend with that oi the guard iur. Underiur with a blue cast is most desirable and this should be free irom bands oi dliierent colour or reddish tips in the individual un- deriur hairs. Mutation Mink with the advent oi mutation mink with their dliierent colour patterns, iur graders place em- phasls upon clearneas oi colour and blending oi the underiur with that or the guard iur oi the par- ticular mutant type. Cotton-like underiur called "cottony underiur' which is a very light coloured, is considered undesirable. A soit silky texture oi the fur is also a very desirable quality or mink pelts. It can be detected by rubbing the side oi the lore- iliiger against the pile of the iur in the ranch. Selection of mink can preierab- ly be carried out when the iur has reached the prime state when the various iur characters are at their. optimum state. Prlmeness is usually reached toward the end oi November in. strains oi standard mink. It is advisable, however, to make three examinations oi stand- ard dark mink at intervals dur- ing tho latter part oi October and early in November to note the se- quence -oi iur priming. which takes place from the tall. overythe husk and sides towards the head region: Final Selection The ilnal selection oi detailed iur characters can .then preierably be carried out by catching the mini: in an examining cage or by hand. to note the texture and col- our oi the leather in relation to primcness or unprlmeneas. The prsence of blue coloured leather resulting from pigmentation in the hair roots bedded in the skin in the region at the nape oi the neck indicates that the animal has not quite reached the prime state. when primeness is reached. this area. oi skin will appear clear or cream coloured and since it is the last body area to become prime, the pelt is then ready to take. Particular care should be taken in regard to estimating the pres- ence oi the prime state in mutant types oi mink, because they do not prime 'up as early as standard animals. Experimental work is in progress at the Dominion Experi- mental Fur Farm and the Domin- ion Illustration Stations. which to date indicates that priming of such animals takes place later than in standard mink on the same ranch. when purchases oi new breed- ing stock are to be made, it is ad- visable to obtain mink which not along the back oi the mink or pelt. The iur should not feel sand or rough, but in a silky pelt simu ates that oi line wheat ilou: in texture. Young mink should be selected in preierence to adult breeders whenever their fur is superior to the adult animal. This practice gives rise to improvement oi the average quality oi iur in the ranch. Ii possible, it is advisable to have an outside. expert .iur grader do this phase oi the work. who irequently can give a. more impartial selectio oi a rancherls rnink upon the basis oi iur qual- W- . . Examination of the iur should be carried out both in shade and Careiul observation oi the.iur oi championship animals at Mink Shows and oi the variously priced bundles oi dressed mink pelts at large iur auction houses are in- structive aids to the average mink rancher in acquiring a knowledge of mink iur quality. Mink which tend to retain good colour in other seasons oi the year than in the iur season, have usually bet- ter iur colour at the prime state than more variable animals. Site of Felts The sine oi the mink pelts is also important because greater valuation is placed on large pelts provided other desirable traits are present. Because size is inherited, selection should be made ior large animals in both sexes which have good iur. Generally. too. in re- lation to the breeding oi mink. large active males are preicrable to smaller ones. Healthy animals which are good eaters. irom litters with clean nests. and free from nervous hab- its. such as screw neck and weav- ing or other pernicious traits such as tall chewing. are desir- able. No deiinite age limit 'can categorically be stated for the number or years a mink should be kept. but it would seem usually inadvisable to retain animals ior breeding purposes more than four or five years in a ranch. Excep- tions, however. may be made for valuable proven breeder males. Sexually inactive males and le- male mink which prove difficult to breed. as well as those with a record oi killing their young. should be pelted. The study oi the pedigrees of mink in the selection oi breeding stock should also receive consid- erable attention because linebred or inbred mink. which have de- sirable heredltiry traits ior iur quality. site and breeding vigour. are more likely to transmit these traits to their oiispring than an- imals'oi mongrel constitution. but oi equally good appeara....e. Proven breeder males are preierablc to untried pup males and usually re- pay their dliierence in cost by litter production. The shipment oi bred females should be made immediately after their breeding season, while it is generally ad- visable to have newly purchased mink stock in the ranch as early in the autumn season as possible so that they may ' acclim- atized and well adjusted to their new surroundings bciorc the next breeding season. liousinggiieport 0'I'rAwA. Sept. 27-(AP)-An art- ificial heart has been used suc- cessfully for the first time in surgical history to give an ”assist” to the normal heart in saving human liie. An Italian surgeon reported on the operation yester- day at the 14th congress oi the International society 0! Surgeons. Dr. A. M. Dogliottl. proiessor of surgery at the University oi Turin. said that last August a 50-year- old patient was brought to his clinic suffering from a large tumor which squeezed the right side oi the heart. The doctor said the man was dying. chieily because his heart was unable to deliver enough oxy- gen to his body. To aid the heart, Dogliotti sub- stituted an artiilcial heart for 20 minutes while he cut out the tumor and then returned the blood to normal circulation. The patient is alive and well. Dogliottl emphasized that he used the artificial heart only as a partial replacement oi the human heart. So iar, no one has reported a succesiul operation in which the human heart has been com- artificial pletely bypassed by means.
