LETTER FROM SENATE Dear Students, As your student representa- tives on the University Senate, we hope that things are going well for you and that you are success- ful in preparing for your exams. We have had. three Senate meetings so far this year with a fourth to come before the New Year. For those of you who are not familiar with Senate, we will en- lighten you. The Senate deals Solely with academic matters at the University. This means that anything that affects the qual- ity of education at UPEI is han- dled by the Senate. Exam- Ples of actions the Senate might take would be to grant tenure ‘o a teacher, handle a student disciplinary matter, or instill a new faculty or school in the degree program. Many decisions have been made by the Senate that will affect your future at UPEI. One of the major things you will take note of is that Sen- ate is reviewing the possibility of having a faculty of nursing at UPEI in the near future. Bach- elor of Science degrees would be granted in this field of study. At our most recent meeting on November 18th, a report was given by Mr. Winston Pineau about the composition of sev- eral Senate committees. As stu- dent Senators we were generally pleased with this report but we did make several recommenda- tions, one being that the numbers of students on various committees be increased. We feel our recom- mendations will be approved and will inform you later as to the outcome. As I have said, we are your reps on Senate and because Sen- ate decisions affect your educa- tion, we welcome any suggestions or complaints about academic or any matters. We can be con- tacted personally or through the Student Union office. An early Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. Sincerely, Student Senators: Rob Coffin, Susan Arbing Lisa Murphy, Earl Byrne Laurie Reeves, Paula Gau- thier Dean MacMillan We offer a university education and a career to make the most of it.
