He wasa young man about twenty-four years of age, and a native of Ken- tucky, though he had resided some time in ‘this Island, —_—— > -- Cou. Rosryson’s Humpty Dumpty Troupe ‘appeared last evening at the Academy of usic, It was the most extensively adver- tised company that ever performed in the city. Hence the very larye audience, chiefly com- posed of men and boys, which greeted the first show. No less than six hundred were present; and we believe that in the number not one person could be found who would ex- ress'a favorable opinion of the pantomime. t was badly acted, low, and without an ap ent point. The boys, of course, laughed eartily ; but, if questioned, could not tell at what,—other than the ludicrous perform. ance of two third class clowns, the worn out exhibitions of ‘‘ trick ” dogs, the slovenly per formance of an Egyptian juggler—which the public are led to believe is wonderful—vr the disgusting and smutty jokes of a pair of pseudo-Irish comedians. Variety shows such as this should receive every mark of disapprobation from a __ respect- able community such as Charlotte- town. We feel sure this omg will; as the writer heard many a husband rémark on leav- ing the ‘‘show” last night: ‘“‘I am glad I did not bring the M’+sus, aud I pity those who did.” ientaantiad lati Srreet Iwrrovemen s —The energy and close application with which the Street Com. missioner, H. B Smith, Esq , has performed his responsible dut.es during the past summer and autumn, are commendable. A few years ago Mr. Smith was engaged in like capacity, when the grading of Water Street, the suc- cessful construction of a drain leading from Walker's Corner to Brighton Bridge, the drain leading from Hillsborough Street through the Railway Works to the river, and other prom inent improvements were made. At that time his valuable services were rewarded by dismissal without pay. We trust that the present City Council are capable of appreciating the services of an efficient officer, and that they will show their appreciation hy giving Mr. Smith a fair re- muneration. During the — summer @ por- tion of Euston Street has been - auized, great and lasting improvemenis have been made on Prince, (rraftcn and Sydney Streets, and now Great George street is receiving at- tention. The much neglected crossing be- tween the Union Bauk and St. Patvick’s Hall is being rebuilt, with proper regard to drain- age. Pwo unsightly and dangerous pumps have been remcved from Great George and Prince Streets, and six con ‘cmned wells have been closed up, The city property at the head of Queen Street has been substantially feaced and neatly whitewashed. Al! these impropements hav» received the constant and personal supervision of Commis. sioner Smith, who, from early in the m rning to late at night, never forsakes his part + or negli cts bis duty. The result of his watchful attention is that a great deal of work has been perf »rmed with very few hands. We venture to say that more work has been performed by Mr. Smith this year on the strects than has ever before been accomplish- ed ia the history of the Corporation.
