A number of ladies and gentlemen at- tending the Sit. James’ picnic at Morell yesterday became i]] after dinner, great excitement was caused. Vomiting was the main symptom, accompanied by diarrtcea and great muscular weak. ness, Severe abdomioal pains wete also experienced, all he could for the sufferers in the | absence ofdrugs. Many of those attack- | ed were so greatiy distressed as to be helpless and had to be carried on board the train. At Mount Stewart aod Char- lottetown medical a:d was called in. On arriving at Charlottetown those suffering most severely were driven to their homes, where they were attended to. The sym- pioms indicated ptumaine poiconing, thought to have been caused by canned goods. The occurrence is to be regretted, but it is pleasing to hear that the conee- quences are not likely to be serious. —_- PASTEURIZATION OF MILK. Sin,—It is pleasing to observe that we are having machinery in operation in this city to pasteurize milk for the consump- tion of inhabitants of thie city, Not Only will it be beneficial tothe adults, but doubly beneficial to the infants and young children who are fedon condenssed milk, farinaceous foods and on some of the artificial foods onthe market. ‘The high death race in other countries from gastro- intestinal diseases has been greatly reduced ty pasteurized milk. No infant should be ted on cow’s milk in its raw state, but the milk for their use should be pastenriz- ed as soon as possible afcer the milking, the so as tO prevent multiplication of bacteria and thus prevent the accumulation of __ their metabolic products. Tne pathogenic bacteria fre- quently encountered in milk, and which are a source of great danger to infants, are the ordinary pyogenic cocci; the tubercle bacilli, and virulent colon bacilli ass we! as the bacillus ear itidis sporogenes whica klein believes to play an _ active role in the causation of idiarrhoe. Cattle having garget should be isula'ed trom the herd and their milk should nut te used. The millk of cows éufferiog trom this condition 18 dangerous and some means should be adopted to eee that the cows supplying milk to the city are io a healthy cca ition. These organisms are most probable also derived from manure and gaip ic pathegenic power through multiplication in tne milk. Ifthe pro- prie O° of this icstiintion will gueranteeto supply an average ot i Cent, butter fac in bis milk we are sure this will be a decided improvemert on our present supply we think the city should possess a Babcock milk tester in the bands of rome eompetent persuc who would test samples of the milk fur nished and be a check upon adulteration end skimming. Ins report made by Dr. S.E. Getty on June 201 1897 before the Alumni Society of Beilevue Hospital from studies made in Yonker+, N, Y.in 1896 he result of substituting pasteurized mk for ordinary cov® milk decreased the death rate 47 per. cent. We sbould gladly hail and welcome thie institution ic our midst and encourage the proprietor with the full pa ronage of he citv, and it is to be hoped that he wil! be ab'e to purchase a eufficient supply of milk fresh from the cow in order to im- mediately bring it under the influence of the pasteurizer, We wish him every enccess, and trust the venture wil! prove profitable. ur Ler i and PaYsicran. ee NEW MOWN HAY ie eweet smelling *# source of honest profit, but pota- m< bis trom & cough is neither piessant nor profitable, so insure with 25 cents wi h # bottle of Adameon’seBotanic Cough Balsam. 25c. all Druggists. mate = Seinen _ f o> PRINTING, G00 PRINTING, Serious Illness of Several Who At- and ' } | _——— { Tue Acapia is in port.
