The volume of our export and import trade was very large. breaking all records, maklnga total of $394,000,000, and show- _ ing an excess of 12 millions over the previous year, which had been tar higher than any previous high water mark. As A usual the great bulk of our growing trade was with the Mother Country and the United States. In a table showinrz the commerce of ‘ twenty-six nations Canada now' stands eleventh in the order of volume, only ex- ceeded by the United Kingdom, United States, France, Germany, the Nether- lands, Belgium. Austro-Hungary, India, Russia and Italy. In fact Italy"s trade is but little in excess of Canada‘s trade. China and Japan with their teeming millions of population have each less trade than Canada. Switzerland, Sweden and Norway, Spain. Denmark and Tarkey,,with many others trail behind nq in a dlmlnlshingnline. We have two thirds as mush trade asaustria Hungary, with ' its 40 millionb of people, and nearly two .thirds as much as India with its 3(1) mil- irons. ' ' ' ' _ `l"._l'h`e Dominion must inevitably become one ot thefgreat commercial nations ot the emu. with our splendid. advantages of position, looking out upon the Atlantic ' andthle the nearest land to Europe onthe east and Asia on the west. with our vast natural resources in the soil, the forest the mine and the sea, and r peopled by a race endowed with the com- mercial instinct-with all these conditions lu our favour, nothing but the hand of heaven or our own folly can stay our commercial and industrial progress. The annual stock-taking' gives us every reason to face the future with renewed hope and con tldence . By the earlier terms of peace offered to the Boers they might, had they accepted them, have retained the joint use of their language with the English in the Courts, ; the Legislature and the schools. Forty, fifty and even sixty and sixty-five millions of bushels of wheat r have been spoken of as the possible yield. r No doubt the latter estlm ites are away beyond the mark, while still thc outlook _ is a splendid and unprecedented one. The fact that last year’s crop was considered a failure, and yet the farmers this yearsow- ed more largely than ever before, showed their resolute and abiding conhflence. This year`s crop has justided their trust. The one danger yet to be passed is from the summer frosfs, but early sowini! thu year has made the harvest ready in ad- vance of the time when the frost usually COIIl6S» __ medicine that will cure Dia- _ ii _ betes. He is missed that time re. spective ma1adies` are not traamisaable from men to animals or vice versa. It is greatly to be hoped that the eminent Scientist is right. Dr. Koch, now 58 years of age was the discoverer of the bacilli of tuberculosis in 1882, and of cholerain1S83. There is no more emin- ent bacteriologist in the world, His views must command attention every- where, and will serve to greatly relieve the apprehension ofinfectiou from milk and meat-. At the same time Dr. Koch believes that` heredity is a strong factor in transmitting tuberculosis. This is con- trary to the more recent conclusions of other sc ientiiic men. WHY CROUP IS FATAL. mu st be ready for it. It comesas an aecomtmhlment _to an ordinary cough, or it may attack without warning. All ills _of children develop quickly, and when any kind ofoough appears there should be something at hand to stop it with eprompwess, Many a child has choked to death Wlth Croup because the right reined was not convenient. Every one shouldyknow that the right safeauard for a child's cough orany cough is Adamson's Botanic Cough Balsam. Vith this sooth- ing compound in the house, croup is al- wa s easily checked and relieved. _ Ti) give a child a “cough mixture” containing anarcotic is a very serious matter, yet most preparations contain something ‘ of this kind. Adamson's Botanic Balsam is prepared from the pur- est extracts o* barks and roots and gums of trees, and is healthgiviug in every com- peuent part of it. Whereeverit touches an inflamed surface, it heals and soothes it. Nothing every compounded for cough . is so harmless, and nothing so emecacious. Ada.mson’s Balsam is an old remedy r and it has never lost a friend through failure to help. Keep it in the house._ try it on your own cough and‘"do your child a. good turn bv being ready for any emergency.
