October 8, 1996 WRITERS' CONTEST The Sir Andrew Macphail Foundation is sponsoring the first annual Sir Andrew Macphail Writers' Contest. All writers, both professional and amateur, are invited to put pen to paper and enter the contest. Sir Andrew Macphail was an accomplished Islander who had many careers during his lifetime, including those of medical doctor, university professor, editor and author. The Sir Andrew Macphail Foundation needs the help of Island writers to revive the memory of this remarkable man. Writers are encouraged to write about any aspect of Sir Andrew's life, achievements or personality. Entries may be in any form including essay, poem, historical fiction or other. The deadline for entries is October 21, 1996 and prizes (one First Prize-$450, two Second Prizes-$200, three Third Prizes-$50) will be awarded at the Sir Andrew Macphail Memorial Dinner in November. MARGARET (MULLEN) GRIFFIN BURSARY The annual $500 bursary entitled the "MARGARET (MULLEN) GRIFFIN BURSARY" is to be awarded to any Island single parent (male or female) who isa full-time student taking at least three courses per semester in the School of Nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island. It shall be awarded by application to the Scholarship and Awards Committee on the basis of financial need after the first year of study. Applicants must have maintained an average of 65% in their nursing courses in the first year of study. NOTE: Forthe purposes of this bursary, Island residency is defined as having spenta significant portion of one's life in this province. Application forms are available at the Registrar's Office or at the School of Nursing. Deadline for applications is mid-October. Rotary Club Bursary The Rotary Club of Charlottetown Bursary shall be awarded to international students enroled in full-time studies at the University of Prince Edward Island. Academic achievement and financial need will be the selection criteria; therefore, students from developing countries will be of particular interest. Bursary application forms are available at the Registrar's Office. Application deadline is Thursday, 31 October 1996.
