"And you know". he said. "what kind of a deal Prince Edward Is- land Is getting out of this new formula-" Mr. Fleming said that the Pro- gressive Conservative party has stated that the time has come for a retux-u.to fiscal common sense. At a time when the coffers of the Federal Government are filled t. overflowing. does it make sense that Prince Edward Island is now being called on the repay to the tune of over one million dollars, what is said to have been an over- payment to them- - which has been going steadily deeper into debt and has been obliged to raise taxes, he said. "How long are the people some to submit to this?" he asked. "The Conservative Party has something very directly to Say 0" this, and this is said for all Prov- inces, and when the Prime Min- ister of Canada said. as he is quoted as saying yesterday. that his is being put forward for the benefit of the Province of Ontario. let me say to you. with all the em- phasis that I can command. that that is a dishonest bogey." said Mr. Fleming. ..”This is a demand we put for- ward in the name of. and for the benefit of all the Provinces of Can- . '4, and for the benefit of Prince Edward Island as much as for any other, for this Province and the other Provinces of the Marl- times are mr in need of a square deal with the Federal Government at Ottawa in the matter of div- ision of revenue from the joint fields of taxation." CAN BE DONE ''It can be done without Increas- ing taxes." said Mr. Fleming. "the Liberal Government was pol- itically embarrased by the size of its huge budget surplus of last year which was half a billion dol- 1ars." It was so big. he said. that it mean that every man. woman or child in Canada last year was overtaxed by 830.00 by this govern- ment. "With that surplus there was enough money to have done three things that badly needed to be done." said Mr. Fleming. "First. to reduce taxes on the people in the low income brackets. and reduce the taxes on the neces- sities of life; secondly. to have given all the Provinces money that they badly needed to keep their financial heads above water, and carry forward the schemes of development that are so neces- sary for the prosperity of this country; and thirdly. there was enough there also to have given the aged people of this country a decent and necessary increase in the old age pension."
