Tur Bishop of Ontario has appointed Arehideacon Parnell, of Kingston, his Com- missary during hisabsence from the Diocese jn England. Ir is reported that Mr. P. Sinclair, the day | efore yesterday, sirid positively that he would not be a candidate in the coming geperal election. The Workingmen’s Mutual Building So- ciety, Montreal, is in fimancial difficulties, and will probably have to go into liqnida- tion. Mr. Lecayalier, the member for Jacques Cartier, is the Opposition whip in the Jue- bec Legislative Assembly, and Mr. Charles Langelier, member for Montmorency, is the Government whip. From the opening of navigation ‘itt 93th, there were shipped from the St. Law- rence to Europe 1,255 tons of phosphate. Ittis estimated that the total shipment this season will react: 7,000 tons. . lL O O. F. — Regular convocation of ‘* Port la Joie” Encampment, No. 13,” for . the nomination of ofiicers, will take place at Oddfellows’ Hall this evening, at & o'clock. Visiting Patriarchs cordially we)- camed. Cottiston,—Jn the night of Sunday last anunknown ship collided with the Ralph B. Peake, of this city, while the latter was enroute for Montreal—carrying away the maintopsail yards, and mizzen topmast. Guurcu APPOINTMENT.-—As the Vener- able. Archdeacon Read has obtained twelve months leave of absence from his Arch- deaconry, the Bishop of Nova Scotia has appointed the Rev. G. W. Hodgson his Commissary for the Island. Tact Ryz.—The tallest stalk of rye dis- covered as yet, this year, in the Ottawa Valley, is one seven feet, presented to the Renfrew Mercury by a Mr. Ward. About the tallest rve in this city is six feet two inches, and it has a_ peculiar fondness for stalking about bar-rooms. Tue steamer Worcester arrived from Bos- ton last evening, witha cargo of general merchandise, and the following passengers : Miss Lizzie Dean, Miss A. McKinnon, Benjamin Holland, Miss Godfrey, Peter Orchard, H. D. Farrow, Miss Maggie Mc- Léedd, Miss E. Farrow, Miss Maggie Leet, Mrs.. McKenzie, Miss Mary A. Brehaut, Mrs. Taylor, Miss McLeod, Mrs. McKen- zie, Mrs. Pari, Miss Lantern. Tue statement respecting the firing of a gun on Rochford Square last Saturday even- ing was incorrect in one particular. Refer- ring to Mr. Carroll, whose windows were broken by the shot, the statement was :— “fe suspects a fisherman wh» resides at the North side of Square, of being the party. who fired.” We are assured, on good authority, that Mr. Carroll had no grounds for such a sus- picion, and that the person to whom al- lusion was made was unjustly accused. Goop Suootinc.—On Saturday evening some. very good shooting was made at Kensington Range. Mr. R. B. Huestis, 2nd_ Battery Artillery, out of a _ pos- sible” score of 140, made 109 points. This would be counted good shooting anywhere : At 200 yards 22444—16 ; at 400 yards, 2255554—28 ; at 509 yards, 4555554 —%33; at 600 yards,445450142—52 ; making @ total score of 109. Quire a commotion was caused shoitly after twelve o'clock last night, by the con- tinuous blowing of a steam whistle. A number of persons thinking it was a signal of a fire, roused themselves, and, after as- certaining the cause, went back to their several ‘slumbers somewhat ‘‘ sold.” It proved that an escape of steam from the tug ‘‘ Winnie” was the cause of the alarm. — => Souris Items, The farmers in this section have looked sad on account of the drouth. But a great change came over them last week. The loud thunder and sharp lighting, accoin- panied by plenty of rain of last Wednesday night, would not allow them to sleep, and have changed the colour of the grain and grass, as much asthe sad countenance of the. farmer. Crops, of all classes look well, Much excitement pveyails here, as to the change of the location of ths Rratlroad and the site for the depot. Many want it nearer their door. Others farther away. All are of one mind, that it must be moved out of the sand pretty soon or be lost; so any place will suit better than where it is. Soon arrangements will be made to build | anew road to the Breakwater. Many are looking for a chance to grab a few dollars of the public money. Also, next comes the repairing of breakwater. This bubble is ready to be pricked ; as the time is drawing to a close to let out the contract. A large business is being done at this place in canning lobsters. Double the amount has been packed this season that there was last year at the same time; over 2,000 have been put up daily. The past week Mr. Haley has quite a posse at work— old. and young. Mr. White, of Nova Scotia, has charge of the Factory, and | everything moves on like clock-work under his skillful management. Mr. Fuller, of the ‘‘Fuiler House,” is coining money out of the Gulf, by curing a large amount of fish. Very fine specimens of cod have been caught of late. Mr. F. believes in doing instead of talking, as can be seen by the brine if they visit his estab- ment. Mr. D. McCarthy, in the employ of C. C. Jones, met with a had accident last Monday. He drove a pick into his foot some three inches while sinking a tubular well at Mr. Haley’s Lobster Factory. The new Lockup and Court House is be- ing fitted up; and will add one more new building to the place. NEWS BY TELEGRAPH, Defeat of the Jaly Government, Price Refuses to Vote! Further Discussions Going On, (Special Despatch to Examini r.) MONTREAL, June 1). ° dress Prive refusing to vote. After the vote to-day, Watts, of Drummond and Arthabaska, proposed a motion of confidence in the Govern- ment, when Chapleau moved, that as the Gov- ernment was in a minority, it should resign. The discussion on the amendment is pro- ceeding, and a division may be taken to-night. ~~ The 8erlin Congress. IMPOSING CEREMONIES, PHELIMINARY WORK. Sketch of the Programme, ; ~—*s ws we . (Sp cial Dispateh to Kraminer. ) f BERLIN, June Il. All the Plenipotentiaries will have arrived here by Wednesday except the Turkish, who cannot reach the city before Friday or Satur- day. fhe Pilenipotentiaries will be received on Vednesdlay in State audience by the Crown Prince, and they will be conveyed to the Palace in State carriages, On Thursday afternoon the Congress will meet for the first time, and aiter the transac- tion of necessary formalities, such as the veri- fication of the several powers of the Plenipo- tentiaries and the appoimtment of officials. The proceedings will be opened by Prince Bismarck, as President, by submitting his memorandum of the resume of subjects to he treated directly by the Plenipotentiaries, each of whom willl receive a copy of this document. lhe business of the first sitting will be con- tined to the settlement of the question, whether or not Congress shall invite Greece to participate in its transactions, A state banquet, at the castle, will be given the Plenipotentiaries and their suites, on Thursday or Friday evening. It is highly improbable that Roumania or Servia will be accorded direct access to Con- gress, either with full or consulative powers, The original anticipation that the Congress would complete its labors in a fortnight, is thought likely to be realized. Commissioners will then be sent to Turkey to settle details. The result of the Congress, it is anticipated here, will not be unfavorable to Russia. She will probably get a portion of Bessarabia and Armenia, the latter including Kars and Ardahan certainly; and, perhaps, also Batoum, but not Biyazid. Wilhelm’s street is in a great stir of antici- pation. Newspaper correspondents from all parts of the world are already here. A report is current that the Bonaparte, Orleanist and Bourbon interests ere to be privately ad- vocated during the Congress by gentlemen deputed for the occasion, hope being enter tained by Monarchist parties in France that a conservative re-action will shortly set in at Berlin and that Monarchy may have another chance at Paris. The tug Henry Aitken which happened to be at that port at the time, was dispatched to the disabled vessel’s assistance, and succeeded in towing her into Shediac.
