[wereap of frankly admitting that it had deceived its readers to the extent of about $8,000,000 when it stated that the total revenue of the Government was the meas- ure of the people’s taxation, the Patriot changes its ground and plays upon 4 phrase used by THe Examiner. THE EXAMINER stated that the amounts paid to the Govern- ment for railway tickets, postage stamps, etc..—-amounting in 1585 to $7,731,050 were not t be regarded as taxes imposed, but as payment for services rendered by the Government; and the Patriot retorts that | it supposed, in its simplicity, that ‘all | taxes were paid for some kind of service.” How clever, and how witty ! But neither great cleverness nor great wit are required to mark the distinction which exists between payments which are freely made to the Government for the im- mediate purpose of obtaining particular services from the Government, and taxes immediately at the etic eta ihe EA NLL IE SIGE ALLL EAS THE DAILY EXAMINER, | - and the firm hand of the law reached out towards this class of sportsmet. We would particularly mentior the fol- '} lowing places where some effort should be Pond. Local magistrates in these several local - ities should interest themselves to see that birds are uot shot there out of season; and property holders adjacent, hearing the gun shots, can surely lay hands on the depre- dators. 2-0 —_______— Notes and Comments. —In Quebee Cardinal Taschereau is dis- countenancing the destruction of growing forest trees, and encouraging the growth of fodder corn, and the application of the sys- tem of ensilage. The failure of the wheat crop in the West and Northwest will, no doubt, cause a rise in breadstufis, and Canadian farmers who are so furtunate as to raise good crops of wheat will probably be able to obtain re- munerative prices for what they have to sell. —The following is an extract from a private letter received from a resident of Northern Dakota by a gentleman in this city: ‘Dakota gets a black eye this year: not over a half, possibly not a third of a crop. In the section 1 am in some whole counties —not over a quarter crop.” LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. Sadhaes Seenimiiin, Sir,—In the Datty Examiner of July 18, under the heading of ‘*The Poacher’s Net,” see an article censuring our Fishery and River Wardens. I[ would not have noticed ‘*Creel” were it not for the general and indiscriminate attack he makes on all which are imposed by the Government for } the purpose of maintaining the various) public services of the country. The Patriot does not, evidently, place a high value upen | | the intelligence of its readers and the sup- porters of its party in this Province. According to the Patriot, the more busi- | ness is being done by the Government, and the more money it obtains on account of | its railways, its canals, its post offices, etc., | + | the heavier the taxation of the people. | almost everyone— | | but everyone well, knows that the reverse 1s the case. luxation is, undoubtedly, somewhat hea- | vier now than it was in 1878. In point of fact, the average tax paid per head of the population was, in 1878, $4.37, and in 1838 $5.67—a difference of $1.30. But when one reflects upon the enormous sums which | have, in the meantime, been expended | . m ¢ . ’ ai: et Pe rate... W “h | % i . . upon he Canadian Pacific Railw ty which | centre of Victoria City, ae Mr. McKenize declared would exhaust the | resources of the British Empire—when one | thinks of the millions which have annually been expended on the railways all over the country, other und upon the millions which have been paid out tion of public buildings and permanent our River Wardens. There may be some truth in **Creel’s” statements with regard to some of the streams he has named. I will let those who are interested defend themselves. But I can tell *‘Creel” that the statement he has made with regard to netting in the Wheatley River, has not the slightest particle of truth in it. There has not been a net cast or set inthe Wheatley River for many years. The angler’s sport and fishing of trout is as good there as ever it was. The Fishery Warden at Wheatley River does his duty fearlessly, as some of those sports whom ‘‘Creel” refera to in the seventh clause of the article in question, and likely **Creel” himself well knows.
