CANADA Killed 0n Active Service Cassld, Maxwell Herold, LAC., Launces on. Tasmania. Australia. reinforcements for infantry We know that in the training camps in this country at the present time there are men who have volun- teered, who are receiving their training. There are men who have been mustered out and who are re- celving their training. 'I‘hese men will be part of this 10,000. Mr. McNaughton: No. \'i~'ith reference to the 16,000 of which we have been speaking, in order to be specific I would point out that the number is to be made up of 5,000 in December, 5,000 in January, and then three monthly quotas of 2,000. Mr. Crulckshank: Is the war to be over then’! Mr. McNa hton: May I ana- wer one quest on at a time. What I have said is additional to the plans which we have made before and which I am hoping to show you in detail later. Mr. Brooks: Will this 5.000 for the first month be taken entirely from N.R.M.A.? Mr. McNaughton: Substantially, yes. Mr. Hanson (York-Sunbiiryt: You said "all", this afternoon. Mr. ro : Will any volunteers be taken in that first five thous- and? Mr. McNaughton: I cannot ana- wer the question yet. (t Mr. Brooks: Wll any of the musterlng out be taken, men who have received their training? Mr. McNaughton: The person- nel who have been remastered are in the other stream which was ar- ranged before we took this action. Mr. ks- They ere not in- eluded Mr. “McNaughton: No. No Deflnlin Answer Mr. Brooks: We cannot get a definite answer on that at the present time. As regards this 16.000 N.RM.A. personnel, covered by tie-day's order, we know that in reinforcing there are certain geo- graphical areas which reinforce certain units at the front repre- sentative of those areas. OVII-IIAI Missing 0n Active Service After Air Operations l McNaughton Statements Disc 3) one area has not enough men from the 16,000, will reinforcements come from some other geographical area, or will each area reinforce its own? Mr. McNaughton: It has not been found practical to keep .. one to one relation between areas in Canada and units in the field Wt havetried always, whenever serv- ice conditions permitted. to put people in units that were in some way affiliated with their place of origin. An honest attempt was made in that direction, but it breaks down; you cannot section- alize in that way. Mr. Brooks: In other words. _.ou may have British Columbia men reinforcing Ontario. or Nova Scu- tla reinforcing Quebec. . McNaughton: It happens: but try to reshuffle them after they have been in the unit for a few d3: and you will find that g their toes in and do not want to move. Mr. Brooks: Are the men that are taken from ordnance and the other corps to be replaced by N. R.M.A. personnel who were in Canada? Mr. McNaughton: In some cases the answer would be, yes. We have to use hands and feet for labour wherever we can get them, In many cases there is a scaling down of establishments. Mr. Brooks: All across Canadar , . McNaughton: All across Canada, in accordance with he lan. At one stage with the pose!- illty of an attack on our and east coasts, and in view of the possibilities of carrier-borne other aircraft coming in, rightly for the safety and the o Canada, coast defence, anti.- aircraft and other uards were ar- ranged. But with t e progress of the war these forms and scales of attack have become a remote con- tin ency and we are justified in wit drawing men from them. It is a matter of common sense. Cites N. B. Mr. Brooks: What is the maxi- mum age for infantry overseen Mr. McNaughton: The maximum is forty, but the man must dlOEi the pulhem requirements. Mr. Brooks: I understand that; but men are being sent over from these other corps up to .urty years of age for infantry if their pulhems permit? Mr. McNaughton: The thirty- nlnth birthday is the bar line Mr. Brooks: I do not suppose the minister could tell me new many of those who have been mustered out of these other corps have been between the ages of thirty-five am‘ forty. Mr. McNaughton: The informa- tion I have is that there would not. be many, but I have not that break-down. Mr. Brooks: Well. I happen to know there are quite a few. The minister stated that N. R. M. A. personnel would take the places of these men here in Canada. but I should like to ask whether he would not consider a well-train- ed N.R.M.A. man of twentv or twenty-one a better soldier to send Overseas than these men between 13494“ ' t -flve and lorfv who were drawn from these other sources. Mr. McNaughton: The answer is in the affinnative. but unti‘ to- day I had no such authority. Mr. Brooks: I understand ruur position. Mr. Brooks: I should like to ask the minister also if at the pres- ent tlnie his department is en- countering any objections from men who have been home from overseas, such as men who have been on prisoner of war escort and others, to their return over- seas, while they see in Canada so many young men of military nee trained wider the N.R.M.A. (To Be Continued) NEW HAVEN W. l.
