The other got on the reeff off St. Peter's Island, but we are pleased to learn she has since been gut off, and is now in this port. A number of other vessels are reported on shore on the opposite coast, but we have not yet learned particulars. Tie feliowing certificates are a sufficient guarantee of the | entire safety and efficiency of the Safety Lamp and Feeder :— | We have hed an opportunity to test the Patent Safety Lamp | and amp feeder of Mr. Sohn Newell, of this city, im regard to the measure of protection their construction affurds. In the trisls to which we subjected them, we endeavoured, without effect, te produce explosions of the vapor of the @uil mixed with air, and to burst them by the pressure of the vapor alone. The principle adopted by Mr..Newell is that of the well known Davy Lamp. He has so combined the parta, that we are satisfied that all risk of explosive action is removed. Caarces T. Jacxcon, M. D.,? Aces to the State Ave. A. Haves, M. D., of Massachusetts. Boston, August 30, 1852, Mr. John Newell, of Boston, hae exhibited to me a Lamp, and also containing vessels, furnished with wire gauze protec- tors, upun the principle of Davy’s Safety Lamp for miners. He has used both those instruments before me with inflammable fluids, and in both, when set on fire, the flame was arrested by the wire gauze, which is coated with silver. If the instruments are faithfully constructed, and carefully attended to, so that the wire gauze do not suffer injury from corrosion, wear, or violence, | am of opinion that the protection will prove effectual against explosion. Nothing short of this conviction would in- duce me to countenance the continued use of the burning fluids, so called, as [ have thought they ought to be entirely discarded, if not prohibited from use: so frequent and dreadful are the accidents occasioned by ignorance and carelessness. In every case, glass |amps should be given up, and those of meta] sub- stituted, on account of the danger of fracture. New Haven, Oct. 16, 1853. B. Si,uiman, senior. I have examined Newell’s Patent Safety Lamp and Lamp Feeder. They are constructed upon strictly philosophical Principles, having a tube of silvered wire guaze, with a smal! perforation in the cap. {f well made, they cannot fail to insure protection against those dangerous explosions to which the vapors of burning fluids and camphene are subject, when mixed with air. ‘Their general introduction, f have no doubt, weuld prevent many distressing and fatal sccidents. £. 8S.
