Chicago, Sept. 6.-An appropriate
theme for the Sunday preceding_La-
bor day, helpful and inspiring in its
treatment, is this discourse, in which
the preacher makes special appeal in
behalf of the “churchlesm millions."
The text is Psalm civ, 23, “Man
goeth forth unto his work and to his
labor until the evening."
“What time is it., mister?" the
worknian asked as I went through a.
large factory. “Twenty minutes
past 5,1' I answered- "Ah, then."
said he, “I have forty minutes more
labor before I am my own boss."
The workman kept on pounding-five.
ton, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five,
thirty, forty minutes. During this
interval, while the minute hand was
moving slowly around the dial to-
ward the numerical twelve, that man
and his colaborers continued at their
work. But no sooner did _I the clock
begin to strike 6 than n loud factory
whistle was blown. Immediately the
men and the women. the poys and the
girls alike, dropped their tasks and
turned their backs upon the wheels
and tho leather bands. They took
oi! their aprons and donned their
costs and hats. The front. and the
aide doors of the Kljeet building were
a vortex from which poured an on-
rushing Hood of humanity. Every-
where in our large cities “msn goeth
to his work and to his labor" in
the morning. In the evening hour
man, for the most part, has finished
his daily tasko and heads towards
homo. My text rightly describes the
social conditions of Davidic times.
It as truthfully pictures the labor
: then gone forth' to reach the middle
spicuous illustration of that fact is
seen in St. George's Episcopal church
of New York city. This was once
the famous church of the great _Dr_
| Stephen Tyng. This church is situ-
ated in East Sixteenth street. A
short time 'after the good Dr. Tyng
died the wealthy parishioners of this'
church began to move away. 'There
was great talk nt one time of aband-
oning this Site and going farther up
town. Then came Dr. Rninsford to
this pulpit. He is a. big. \v..x°m heart-
ed, peactical Christian. what did he
do? Dr.-sert that niugnificent down-
_ town field to Satan, as mum’ of our
downtown churches have done? No;
he made St. George's parish right
about face. He made that church
appeal to the classes around its very
doors. He made it accomplish its
work by appealing to the neighbor-
? hood through the social gate. The
'result is St. George's Episcopalian
church, great as its former pastors
,- were, never did the good that -it is
[doing to-day. It is now appealing
to the great unchurched classes. Its
parish houses and social beehives are
busy Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
i Thursday, Friday and Saturday ae
: well as having its church auditorium
l open on Sunday. It is a. church of
fthe "glad hand" and the “every
' night welcome” as well as the church
of “holy prayer." What is true in
reference to St. Georgo’s church is
true of the Judson Memorial church
` of New York and of Russell Conwell's
church in Philadelphia and of the
Park Presbyterian Church of Newark,
‘ N_J., and in one sense'of t.lie Moody
` church of Chicago. Oh, why will not
all of the churches, like those named
learn the value of doing their work
_ by appealing to the social instincts?
I In the most congested parts of our
Q cities the saloons have no diiliculty
3 to live. They appeal to mankind
5 through the social gate. Upon their
I windows I see these words advertised
I everywhere: “Free Lunch," What
; does that mean? Have the saloon_‘
i keepers suddenly become philanthrop-
i fats? Are they animated with the
- gospel desire to feed the poor and

saloon keeper is a man shrewd and
keen in business. He says: "If I

iaicy and grateful loyalty to their
